South Brunswick Lady Vikings Outlast West Windsor-Plainsboro South In First Holiday Tourney Round

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ – After struggling in the first half, the Lady Vikings basketball team found a way to shoot by West Windsor-Plainsboro South at the high school on Monday, 56-46.

“We were getting killed on loose balls and rebounding in the first half,” Head Coach Jeff Johnson said following the game. “We really had to focus on that to come back and have a really good second half.”

Although the Vikings kept it close, down by only three points at the end of the half, the Pirates had the upper hand, dominating in the paint.

It was Gillian Chambres driving her small frame between defenders while taking the ball to the basket several times in the first half that countered the otherwise dominating Pirates.

“That is really out of my character, I don’t normally do that,” Chambres said. “I realized that our team was not playing up to our potential. Someone had to step up to do that.”

Chambres said the outside shot is her main weapon, and the one she practices most.

“We want that from her and she took it upon herself to do it,” Johnson said. “(Chambres) has a motor like nobody else. She never stops.”

Another big factor in the second half was sophomore Alexis Adams controlling both the offensive and defensive boards.

“We have great expectations for her,” Johnson said. “Her role is going to grow as we go along.”

The more aggressive style of play in the second half seemed to throw the Pirates off of their game, allowing the Vikings to take lead in the third period and then, expanding it in the fourth, closing the door on the Pirates.

“This is a team that works hard,” Johnson said. “I just ask them to play in the game like they do in practice to show the parents how hard they work.”

The formula is definitely working as the Vikings enjoy a season opening record of 3-0. The team will play in the second round of the tournament at the high school on Wednesday afternoon.
