MONROE, NJ - It was déjà vu all over again for the South Brunswick Lady Vikings as they lost to the Monroe Lady Flacons in a semi-final matchup again.
Thirteen days after falling to Monroe in the GMC semi-final game, the Vikings again fell to the Falcons in the State Tournament semi-final game in Monroe on Saturday.
After holding the Falcons to only two points in the first quarter, the lady Vikings’ defense collapsed and gave up a massive 20 points in each of the next two periods.
“Turnovers. I felt like they were long periods, we weren’t getting shots. We were just turning the ball over. Turnovers, that’s it,” said head coach Jeff Johnson.
After last week’s loss to Monroe, the Vikings were ready for vengeance.
“We were excited to play them; we had an excellent practice yesterday,” said Johnson. “The girls were excited to play them. I don’t think there was any ‘we can’t do this.’ They wanted to be here tonight, and in the end, we just didn’t take care of the ball.”
Coach Johnson brought this young team very far this season, with only two seniors leaving this year.
The Lady Vikings took a piece of the Red Division title for the first time in 10 years.
It was a shame to see the Lady Vikings’ promising season (19-7) end, but it will be something great to look forward to next December when the 2016-17 season begins.
