SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ – Police caught a scrappy robbery suspect at a local hotel Saturday afternoon.

According to police, West Paterson resident Kevin Thompson-Perry, 27, robbed the cash drawer of the Hotel Vincenza on Route 1 just after noon on Saturday.

Officers Brooke LaBell and Craig Cleffi arrived at the hotel in minutes of the 12:07 p.m. 911 call and spoke to the manager.

The manager told the officers that Thompson-Perry had just robbed the front desk, assaulted people in the lobby, including two employees and a juvenile, and then fled to his room.

Police said Officer LaBell and Officer Cleffi went to the room and knocked on the door.

Thompson-Perry slammed the door opened and yelled for the officers to come in, police said.

The officers instructed Thompson-Perry to leave the room but he refused.

Police said that as Officer Cleffi entered the room, he immediately encountered Thompson-Perry in a fighting stance, and he then knocked Officer Cleffi into a wall.

The officers wrestled Thompson-Perry to the ground as he spit at them, but they were able to subdue Thompson-Perry and get him handcuffed, police said.

The officers took Thompson-Perry to police headquarters where he was charged with robbery, aggravated assault, terroristic threats, resisting arrest, throwing bodily fluids at a law enforcement officer, simple assault, and burglary.

He was lodged in the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center in North Brunswick, police said.

Chief of Police Raymond Hayducka credited the officers with their quick actions in apprehending the suspect.

“The officers were faced with a suspect who was highly agitated and looking to do battle,” he said. “Their quick and decisive actions resolved the situation before it could escalate any further. The danger he posed to the hotel and its guests were stopped by the officers.”
