SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ – Chief of Police Raymond Hayducka was on the scene Tuesday morning to arrest two township men for having illegal handguns, officials said.

According to police, Hayducka and Officer Chris Magee-Vanderveen responded to the area of Ridge Road and Pierson Street at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday to investigate a report of two men walking on the train tracks, one them possibly armed.

Police said that Hayducka, who was not on duty at the time, heard the call and went to the scene separately from the other officer.

Hayducka and Magee-Vanderveen then observed the two men, identified as Kyle Moore, 24, and Virenkuma Patel, 22, both of Monmouth Junction, in the parking lot of the Old English strip mall on Ridge Road, police said.

Hayducka approached the men and identified himself as a police officer and, with Magee-Vanderveen, apprehended the men.

A search revealed that both men were armed with handguns, and both appeared to be impaired, police said.

According to police, an investigation into whether drugs were involved in the incident is ongoing.

Police charged the men each with possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon.

Patel and Moore were both lodged at the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center in North Brunswick on $75,000 and $60,000 bail respectively, police said.

“Officers, both on and off duty, responded to the scene to ensure two men armed with handguns were apprehended,” Deputy Police Chief James Stoddard said. “The safety of our community is the foremost responsibility of the South Brunswick Police department. The brave actions, intelligent approach and professionalism demonstrated by the chief and officers are what is expected of us and is what was delivered.”
