SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ – Police are following several leads to try and apprehend three or four alleged car thieves that escaped Monday night’s manhunt on Route 1.

Capt. Jim Ryan said the suspects evaded officers from South Brunswick, North Brunswick, Franklin Township and a K-9 unit from the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office during a search of the area around the Royal Oaks apartment complex and Deans Lane Monday night.

The incident started at 6:45 p.m. when police got a call about a theft of gas from a station at Route 1 and New Road.

According to police, the 2014 tan Toyota Camry left the station without paying for gas.

A nearby officer saw the vehicle and tried to pull it over on Route 1 north, but it would not stop, police said.

The officer called in the license plate and discovered that the Camry was reported stolen out of Franklin Township on Oct. 31, Halloween night.

According to a Franklin police report, the car was taken from a Townsend Court residence in that town sometime between 5 p.m. and 10:43 p.m. on Oct. 31.

The pursuit continued on Route 1 north and then the Camry hit a police vehicle and parked car before stopping in the parking lot of the apartment complex at the Henderson Road intersection, police said.

Three or four suspects then exited the vehicle and fled on foot, police said.

Officers set up a perimeter around the complex and used a K-9 unit to try and track the suspects, but could not locate them Monday night, police said.

Ryan said the suspects apparently evaded the dragnet and probably made it back to their homes, which police believe were within several miles of the complex, but not in the township.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident and ask anyone with information on the suspects to call (732) 329-4646.
