The list included more than 800 winners of the college-sponsored awards nationwide, and are part of more than 3,000 winners in 2016.

The awards provide scholarships of $500-$2,500 each year the student studies at the college, according to the release.

The organization said that 99 private and 77 public colleges take part in the program, which is one of three categories awarded each year.

Previously, the organization announced winners for both the corporate-sponsored and regular National Merit Scholarships.

The total number of all National Merit winners in 2016 is more than 7,300, the organization said.

More than 1.5 million juniors in 22,000 high schools took part in the competition when they took the 2014 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test last September.

That number was reduced to 16,000 semifinalists representing about 1 percent of high school seniors.

Those seniors then submitted a scholarship application and essay describing their leadership abilities in order to be considered a finalist, according to the organization.

The organization formed in 1955 and awarded more than 323,000 scholarships worth more than $1 billion in its 61-year history, according to the release.

Four hundred and twenty independent corporate and college sponsors, according to the organization, underwrite most of the awards each year.
