SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ – A three-vehicle crash on Route 1 north snarled rush hour traffic for several hours Thursday morning.
According to police, a tractor-trailer driver heading north on Route 1 failed to stop for another truck and car at the New Road traffic light at around 5 a.m. Thursday morning.
The first truck slammed into the rear of the second truck, which then struck the car.
Only the driver of the first truck was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick with non-life threatening injuries, police said.
A gas tank ruptured during the collision, causing a large fuel spill, police said.
The Monmouth Junction Fire Department, Monmouth Junction First Aid, and Middlesex County Hazmat along with New Jersey Department of Transportation responded to the scene.
One lane of the busy roadway was closed for several hours as workers cleaned up the crash.
Traffic was finally flowing normally around 10 a.m.
Police have not yet released information about the drivers, or if any citations were issued.
