SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ – Assemblyman Andrew Zwicker, D-16, recently said he will seek a second two-year term in the state Legislature next year.

“I am declaring that I am running for office next year,” Zwicker said outside of the Democratic headquarters on Nassau Street in Princeton on Sept. 18. “I feel like I am just getting started.”

The township resident and physicist for the Princeton Plasma Physics Lab won the seat last year, defeating GOP incumbent Donna Simon by just over 70 votes.

He became the first Democrat to represent the newly formed 16th district.

“I feel like I’ve done a tremendous amount, but there is so much more to do,” he said. “That’s why I’m out there. I’m knocking on doors, not asking for votes, but what is on (their) mind.”

Zwicker made the comments after U.S. Sen. Cory Booker helped open the Princeton office and gave a rousing speech for Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.

The assemblyman attended the event and said he volunteered for phone bank sessions and is actively working to get the former secretary of state elected in November.

With all that activity, his race will likely begin in earnest after this year’s polling.

His colleague, Jack Ciattarelli, R-16, is one of several people on both sides of the political aisle flirting with a gubernatorial run next year, which could force him to give up his seat that many feel is safely Republican as long as he is in it.

Ciattarelli may announce his run Oct. 4, according to a published report on PolitickerNJ today.

Zwicker said he felt lucky to be in one of only a handful of split districts where the assemblymen from the two parties work together on issues they can agree on.

“I will continue to do that,” Zwicker said. “As of today, there is only one candidate running.”

Former Assemblywoman Simon could not be reached for comment.
