Woodbridge: Middlesex County Democrats Celebrate Municipal, County, State, Federal Victories

WOODBRIDGE, NJ – Middlesex County Democrats celebrated strong wins across the county at all levels.

Besides Hillary Clinton taking Middlesex County and Rep. Frank Pallone easily re-elected to his 6th Congressional district seat, Democrats had a strong sweep in the state legislative seats representing the county, as well as with the freeholders. With yesterday’s wins, the Democrats maintain their seven-member stronghold on the county board.

The only loss in the county was the local race in Milltown, where the Republicans have a consistent stronghold.

The night belonged to Middlesex County Democratic Chairman Kevin McCabe, who worked the ballroom at the Woodbridge Renaissance, as Democrats from the county’s 25 municipalities filtered in to celebrate wins, glad-hand and watch the national returns on CNN.

Winners were eager to take to the microphone to thank their supporters, donors, consultants, spouses, children, etc.

State Sen. Patrick Diegnan, representing the 18th legislative district, won the remainder of the unexpired term of Peter Barnes III, who resigned to become a Superior Court judge. Assemblyman Robert Karabinchak, who had been appointed to Diegnan’s seat in the Assembly, won the remainder of the unexpired two-year term.

“There were hundreds of people who went out into the streets to help us,” Karabinchak said. “They made sure we had a victorious night.”

Diegnan noted he has been involved in Middlesex County politics for nearly 30 years, and said that McCabe “unequivocally” runs the most effective political campaigns as a county party chair. “And I couldn’t have done this without Rob Karabinchak,” Diegnan said. “We are incredible friends and think too much alike. I couldn’t have done this without all of you. So, lets now go out and change the country.”

Middlesex County Sheriff Millie Scott was easily re-elected.  “I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving me a third term,” Scott said. “You have put tremendous trust in me and I will not let you down.”

There were decisive wins in the freeholder race for Democratic incumbents Charles Kenny, Blanquita Valenti and Kenny Armwood.

Kenny, who won his second three-year term, said county Democrats heard a loud and clear message from voters.  “Voters are telling us that county government is running very well,” said Kenny, of Woodbridge. “Voters like how we work together and how we work to make improvements for everyone.”

“We put together a victory tonight that would make them think twice about putting up candidates next year,” Armwood added. “Thank you Middlesex County!”

On the local level, Democrats took control of East Brunswick and maintained the split on the Middlesex Borough council. Democrats were able to chip away at what had been 5-0 control on the South Plainfield council by winning two seats. Democrats also took control of the South River council and built their majority, 5-1, on the Sayreville council.
