3 Flee After Armed Robbers Break Into New Brunswick Apartment House

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ - Two robbers brandishing a handgun and a knife forced their way into a Hamilton Street house Sunday, causing three tenants - one of them affiliated with Rutgers University - to flee the apartment building, Rutgers police said.
 
The incident came hours after two people were robbed while walking on Easton Avenue early Sunday morning. One of those victims is also affiliated with the university.
 
Authorities have not said whether they suspect the incidents are related.
 
 
University police said that at about 8 p.m,. Sunday, the two robbers forced open a rear door of a house on Hamilton Street between Easton Avenue and College avenues.

Once inside, the attackers confronted a resident who is not affiliated with the university, and that victim was able to escape the building, police said.

The robbers went to the second floor, and two people on that floor, one of them affiliated with Rutgers, were able to escape and flee from the house without confronting the intruders, authorities said.

New Brunswick police are urging anyone with information about the crime, or who may have been in the area at the time, to call police at (732) 745-5217.
 

Hours earlier, at about 3:45 a.m., a person affiliated with the university was walking on Easton Avenue between Bristol and Wyckoff streets when he approached by two males who struck and robbed him of personal property.

Moments later, another person not affiliated with Rutgers was walking in the same area when he was confronted by two males and beaten and robbed.

Rutgers and New Brunswick police did not immediately respond calls seeking to determined if they thought the crimes were related.

In a separate incident, Rutgers police said an intruder broke into Loree Hall, 72 Lipman Drive, sometime between 8 a.m. Saturday and 12:10 a.m. Monday, and entered an office in the building.
 
Loree Hall houses a learning resource center.

The Rutgers Police Department asks that anyone with information, or who may have been in the area at the time, to contact the Rutgers police  Detective Bureau at (848) 932-8025.
