EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ - A woman was forcibly removed from her car in the East Brunswick Wal-Mart parking lot on Sunday by a man who stole the vehicle and then committed a series of crimes in Woodbridge.
On March 12, 2019, detectives from both East Brunswick and Woodbridge Police Departments charged a Linden man with multiple crimes stemming from two incidents on March 10, 2019. East Brunswick Police charged Andrew Vayda, 58, with Carjacking, Aggravated Assault, Eluding and Theft after Vayda forcibly removed a female from her vehicle at the Walmart in East Brunswick and stole her vehicle, according to a report issued by the EBPD today.
Patrol units observed Vayda traveling onto the New Jersey Turnpike but were unable to apprehend him after a short pursuit. Vayda then traveled to Woodbridge, where he telephoned a bomb threat and shots fired at a Walmart in Woodbridge. Shortly thereafter, Vayda committed an armed robbery of a pharmacy on New Brunswick Avenue in Woodbridge.
Information developed by both departments led them to the Studio 6 Motel on Route 18 in East Brunswick where Vayda had been staying. Officers arrested Vayda on an outstanding warrant and transported him to the East Brunswick Police Department. Once at headquarters, Vayda was interviewed by both departments, and he admitted to the incidents in both jurisdictions, say police.
In addition to the charges in East Brunswick, Vayda was charged with Armed Robbery, Possession of a Weapon for Unlawful Purpose, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Receiving Stolen Property, Causing a False Public Alarm and Theft by the Woodbrige Police Department.
Vayda was remanded to the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Center in North Brunswick.
