Meadowlands Collecting Toys For Tots

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Meadowlands Racing & Entertainment is holding its 14th annual Toys for Tots collection drive through Saturday, Dec. 9.

All are welcome to bring in new, unwrapped toys and spread holiday cheer this holiday season to a child in need. Meadowlands Racing & Entertainment will be donating all collected toys to the local Marine Corps Toys for Tots.

“We are proud to host a Toys for Tots drive each holiday season,” said Jason M. Settlemoir, GM/COO of Meadowlands Racing and Entertainment. “The holiday season is about family and helping others that are less fortunate. We want to be able to make a child’s Christmas just a little bit brighter.”

Since its approval to be an official activity of the U.S. Marine Corps in 1995, the mission of the Toys for Tots program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year. The program then distributes those toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community in which the campaign is conducted.

Harness Racing Museum & Hall of Fame To Host Holiday Concert

GOSHEN, N.Y. — Great music and fun are traditions of the Harness Racing Museum & Hall of Fame’s annual holiday concert. Celebrating its 43rd year, this community event kicks off the festive season. Although much has changed in the world since that first concert in 1974, the charm of sleigh bells and the warmth of gathered neighbors continue to “make the season bright.” Mark your calendar for Thursday, Dec. 7 at 7 p.m.

Performing again this year in the Museum’s William R. Haughton Memorial Hall is the Evergreen Chorus, a chapter of Sweet Adelines International based in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Singing in four-part harmony, this award-winning a cappella group, judged the third best Sweet Adelines small chorus in the world, based on their performance at the Harmony Classic Division A level competition at the Las Vegas MGM Grand in October, will entertain listeners with a selection of holiday favorites.

Goshen High School’s Varsity Choir and Jazz Voices Ensemble will return for their 18th appearance on this special occasion. The evening will end with the concert’s traditional audience participation number, “The Twelve Days of Christmas.”

This year’s concert will feature preconcert entertainment by 18-year-old gifted cellist Alex Prizgintas in Haughton Hall.

Concert admission is $3 per person, and is waived for Museum members. Non-members who bring a new unwrapped toy for the Marines’ “Toys for Tots” program receive a $1 admission discount. As seating is limited reservations, as soon as possible, are recommended.

The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program distributes toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community. If you are unable to attend the concert, we invite you to drop off a new unwrapped toy in the Museum’s main lobby from now until Tuesday (Dec. 12) between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily. Help make a child happy this holiday season!

Yonkers Raceway Names Haughton as Director of Racing.

Yonkers Raceway has named Robert (Cammie) Haughton to the newly-created position of Director of Racing.

Haughton, 57, was serving as the Raceway’s racing consultant. He is a former presiding judge at both the Meadowlands and Yonkers.

The son of Hall of Famer Billy Haughton also worked as assistant race secretary at Saratoga Raceway after himself training and driving.

“Cammie’s job is to improve our handle,” Raceway COO Bob Galterio said. “We value his experience, and I would expect him to work in tandem with race secretary Steve Starr, presiding judge Nick Ferriero and the horsemen to do just that.”

“I’m looking forward to starting my new position,” Haughton said. “I definitely believe Yonkers’ product is as good as any in the sport, and all of us are committed to getting the racing fans to take notice.”
