SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ - The South Brunswick Police Department's Click it or Ticket campaign begins on Monday, May 20 and runs through Sunday, June 2. The goal of the campaign is to promote widespread seat belt use by drivers and passengers. The SBPD is joining with law enforcement agencies across the nation to encourage vehicle drivers and passengers to use seat belts. High visibility seat belt checkpoints and patrols will be used during the Click it or Ticket campaign.
“Using a seat belt is the simplest way for motor vehicle occupants to protect themselves on the road,” said Eric Heitmann, Director of the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety. "Crash statistics show that between 2013 and 2017, seat belt use saved nearly 69,000 lives nationally.”
“For whatever reason there seems to be a disconnect with people feeling they don’t need to buckle up when riding as passengers in rear seats and this is a concern,” Heitmann continued. “By promoting back seat usage of seat belts during our Click It or Ticket campaign, we’re encouraging passenger habits that will save lives.”
Last spring, more than 350 New Jersey police departments joined in the two-week Click it or Ticket campaign. More than 19,000 seat belt citiations were issued across the Garden State along with more than 4,000 speeding summonses. Over 600 impaired driving arrests were also made during the Click it or Ticket campaign in 2018.
