SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ – You are not going crazy and the township is not burning down.
According to police, the smoke odor and haze in the air Sunday night comes from a wildfire burning at Fort Dix in Burlington County.
Fires have been raging at the base and the neighboring Browns Mills section of Pemberton Township for several days, according to published reports and that of residents’ Facebook Posts.
Local police put out an alert Sunday night after several emergency agencies throughout the region received calls about the odor, police said.
In the past several days, smoke plumes and odors have crept from the base to the Jersey Shore, getting attention from residents there, the reports said.
News archives from several publications in the region show a history of this kind of event, with smoke from fires there reaching Central New Jersey as far back as 2010.
Locally, police assured residents that there were no fires Sunday night in the township.
