NEW JERSEY - Martin Luther King Jr. Day is one of 10 federal holidays. It falls on the third Monday in January each year to commemorate the birthday of the civil rights leader. King's actual birthday is January 15. He would have been 91 years old this year.

The year 2000 was the first time the holiday was marked in all 50 states. In 1994, former President Bill Clinton signed legislation making MLK Day a national day of service. On Monday, more than 2,000 volunteers mark the day in the Garden State by participating in 10 service projects including beautifying designated schools throughout the state and spending time with seniors.   • All United States Post Offices are closed though UPS and FedEx will still be making deliveries.
  • All municipal, state and federal offices are closed.
  • All municipal, state and federal courts are closed.
  • With the absence of snow this winter, most public schools are closed.
  • Many colleges and universities will not hold classes including Rutgers University.
  • Most banks are closed.
  • The New York Stock Exchange is closed.
  • Public libraries are closed.

Most New Jersey Transit train lines including the Northeast Corridor and the North Jersey Coast Line are operating on a weekend schedule for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, but some like the Princeton (DINKY) is operating on a regular schedule. Path trains are running on a Saturday schedule. To be certain what schedule is running on, check the NJ Transit website.

Most New Jersey Transit buses are operating on a special holiday or weekend schedule. However, some bus lines are not operating on January 20 due to Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Check the NJ Transit website to be certain a particular bus line is running on Monday.

Malls and most retail stores are open for business on Martin Luther King Jr. Day with many running special sales.
