12th CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT -Yesterday at the Progressive Congress Strategy Summit, Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman, D-12, was named Progressive Freshman of the Year for her leadership and steadfast support of progressive issues.
“I came to Congress to fight for change ― for better wages for American workers, for better schools for our kids, for affordable housing accessible to every family, and for an economy that allows folks who play by the rules to get ahead,” said Watson Coleman. “I’m honored to be recognized for what I’ve done so far. But more than anything, this is a reminder that there’s still plenty of work to do.”
"I'm thrilled that Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman is being honored with our New Member Award,” said Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) Co-Chair Raúl Grijalva (AZ-3). “Bonnie has been a leader in Congress and within the CPC from the moment she was sworn into office. She mobilizes members to speak out for progressive principles, and her voice has quickly become one of the most trusted on Capitol Hill. Bonnie represents the very best of where the progressive movement is going, and I'm excited to see her lead us there."
“Since arriving in Congress, Bonnie Watson Coleman has been a leader on raising the wage, improving our schools, and protecting women's rights,” said CPC Co-Chair Keith Ellison (MN-5). “She is a true progressive, and the obvious choice for progressive Freshman Member of the Year.”
Watson Coleman was selected early in the 114th Congress to lead the Congressional Progressive Caucus’ weekly Special Order on the floor of the House.
The Progressive Congress Strategy Summit brings together progressive lawmakers, organizers, and thought leaders from around the country, offering the opportunity to identify and implement progressive policies and actions across the United States.
The Congressional Progressive Caucus consists of one United States Senator and seventy five members of the United States House of Representatives, and is the largest caucus within the House Democratic Caucus. Established in 1991, the CPC reflects the diversity and strength of the American people and seeks to give voice to the needs and aspirations of all Americans and to build a more just and humane society.
