NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ - A 33-year-old New Brunswick was struck and killed while standing on the shoulder of the New Jersey Turnpike early Saturday.

Francisco J. Cespedes-Garcia was outside his vehicle on the northbound side of the Edison section of the Turnpike when he was killed.

According to a statement provided to TAPinto New Brunswick by State Police Sgt. Lawrence Peele, the driver of a Toyota RAV-4 struck a Honda Accord that was traveling in the right lane. That sent the Honda onto the shoulder, where it struck Cespedes-Garcia.

Police said Cespedes-Garcia was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident occurred at about 4:18 a.m.

Police said the drivers of both cars remained on the scene and are cooperating with the investigation.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
