SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ - The South Brunswick Boy’s Track and Field team has won the Group IV State Championship this past Saturday in Tom’s River. The group was able to grab first place over Jackson Memorial with a score of 39-25. The Boy’s Track and Field team will be wrapping up their season at the State Meet of Champions next Sunday at the Ocean Breeze Track and Field Facility in Staten Island.
Christopher Ruskie is the head coach of the South Brunswick High School’s Boy’s Track and Field. He is also a Physical Education teacher at Crossroads Middle School. This is the second time that Coach Ruskie has won the state championship with the South Brunswick team.
Coach Ruskie says that the key to the team’s success was balance, being one of the first teams to place in the championship with distance runners, sprinters, rowers, and other teams. Being able to bring multiple teams this far was a great sense of pride for the South Brunswick coaching staff.
“We try to really coach all the different events and not just specialize in one event or another” Coach Ruskie said, “A lot of the times these teams will just focus on one or two, but we were able to have a good balance and score in multiple events.”
Coach Ruskie describes himself as a competitive person and tries to push his players to never accept failure and losing. He aims to inspire his players to try to do bigger and better things and hopes to see this team reach higher goals as the years go on.
Star seniors on the team include Ola Porbeni who finished third in the 55-meter hurdle and scoring 10 points to win the 55-meter dash. Mr. Porbeni also broke the school record for the 55-meter hurdle and 55-meter dash. The field events were dominated by Dante Bailey who cleared the 6'4" in the high jump on his 3rd attempt for the win, while Majid Howard Baker tied for 5th.
