MONMOUTH JUNCTION, NJ - A week after losing to St. Joseph High School (Metuchen) in the finals of the Greater Middlesex Conference Ice Hockey Tournament, the South Brunswick High School boys varsity hockey team fell to Ocean Township High School in the quarterfinals of the NJSIAA Public A Tournament. Ninth seeded Ocean Township shut out the eighth seeded Vikings 6-0 to move on in the tournament to face top seeded Hillsborough High School. Both South Brunswick and Ocean Township received a bye in the first round of the tournament.
South Brunswick had beated Ocean Township 10-2 in a lopsided victory earlier in the season, but had trouble putting the puck past Tony Macaluso on Friday. Macaluso made 26 saves to secure the shutout. Clay Romanok gave up six goals and made 19 saves for the Vikings. Kenny Maxwell had two goals and one assist while Brendan Convery, Luke Hagerman, Eli Perelshteyn and Dylan Haar all had one goal and one assist.
South Brunswick concludes the 2019 hockey season with an 11-7-3 overall record. The Vikings finished second behind St. Joe's in the GMC with a 6-2 division record. St. Joe's was undefeated in conference play this season.
Hillsborough and Ocean Township face off on Monday in the semifinals. Fourth seeded Wayne Hills High School and fifth seeded Marlboro High School make up the other semifinal matchup. The finals of the Public A Tournament hit the ice on February 27 at the Mennen Sports Arena in Morristown.
