MIDDLESEX COUNTY, NJ -- St. Joseph of Metuchen has been awarded the top seed for the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament in boys basketball, which gets under way with preliminary-round games this weekend.
South Brunswick (17-4), one of the hottest teams in the GMC with five victories in a row and 10 wins in its last 11 games, is the fourth seed. Just six days ago, the Vikings defeated St. Joe's, 82-67. South Brunswick will host the winner of the Timothy Christian-Piscataway Tech preliminary next Tuesday in the first round.
East Brunswick (10-10), which already has exceeded last season's win total, is the 11th seed. The Bears will face the winner of the South River-Sayreville preliminary in the first round on Tuesday.
St. Thomas Aquinas is the second seed and New Brunswick is seeded third.
The round-of-16 will take place at the higher-seeded team's gym next Thursday. The quarterfinals will be contested at Middlesex County College on Sunday, Feb. 23. The semifinals will be played Wednesday, Feb. 26 at New Brunswick High School.
The GMC championship game will be played at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28 at Middlesex County College following the girls' final at 6 p.m.
