MAPLEWOOD, NJ - Just one day after a Code Red alert was activated at Maplewood Middle School when a student was found to be in possession of a loaded gun, there was another potentially violent incident at Columbia High School.

Maplewood Police Captain Dawn Williams issued a statement that at approximately 2:48 p.m. on June 4, Maplewood Police Officers responded to Columbia High School after receiving a report of a student who was armed with a handgun.

According to Captain Williams, the school was placed in a Code Yellow "shelter in place" status until it was possible to determine that it was safe to resume normal operations.

A ninth grade male student, age 15, was found to have an air soft gun and a kitchen style knife. Air soft guns, which are sometimes called pellet guns or BB guns, are replica firearms that use plastic pellets, often called BBs.

The juvenile was taken into custody as a result of the incident. Charges are pending investigation and no further details are available at this time. A Columbia High School representative confirmed that the student will not be returning to school.

Maplewood Police believe there is no indication that there is a threat to students attending the school and/or school staff. As a precautionary measure, additional patrols will be assigned to the area of the school.
