SOUTH ORANGE, NJ -- There were boats sailing along the Meadowland Park Duck Pond on North Ridgewood Road for the Annual Spring Fun Float on Sunday.
The boats were model boats from the South Orange Seaport Society (SOSS), which included sail, scale, steam, semi-scale and fast electric. The models range in size from a 4 1/2 inch tug to a 16 ft. Destroyer.
The Annual Spring Fun Float has been around since the club started in about 1988. It is a non-competitive event and a day to meet others who enjoy model boats. SOSS was organized to promote and further knowledge of radio control model boats in the community.
“All model boaters (were) welcome, a great day to see and meet other boaters and some of the famous people in model building,” said John S. Gill, the club’s Commodore. “Model boaters are more then willing to talk about their projects and there is every kind of boat you can think of.”
SOSS meets the first and third Sunday at the pond in South Orange during the summer. During the winter months, they meet at the Baird Community Center. For more information and a full list of events visit the SOSS website at www.angelfire.com/nj3/sos.
