UPDATED: SOUTH ORANGE, NJ -- The Irvington Avenue Corridor Advisory Committee is reaching out to more than 50 volunteers who said they wanted to be involved with the initiative to improve the area.
The committee met for the first time last week to consider its long-term and short-term goals.Doug Zacker was elected as the chairman of the committee.
Sheena Collum, a South Orange trustee who is a liaison to the committee, said that the group wants to "gauge what area of interest (the volunteers) would like to be involved with.”
According to Collum, there is no official start or end date for the project. The committee will seek to have short-term initiatives such as beautification and branding done quickly.
“Then there’s the larger challenge of development opportunities, filling vacancies with new and desirable businesses, identifying the appropriate zoning, building stronger relationships with property owners and working together,” Collum said in an email interview.
The committee is made up of representatives from the Board of Trustees, residents, business owners and Seton Hall University. Collum said the committee has a proposed budget of $100,000 for long-term improvements.
The committee is working with data gathered by Seton Hall's Market Research Center.
The next meeting for the will be on Wednesday, March 26.
