SOUTH ORANGE, NJ – A new online newsletter, which highlight South Orange public safety units and initiatives, has been published by the South Orange Citizens Public Safety Committee.
Sheena Collum, chairwoman of the advisory committee that was founded in early 2010, said the goal is to publish quarterly.
She said that in addition to informing the South Orange community about public safety issues, the newsletter was started to accentuate the “positive things” that happen and to recognize the contributions of public safety employees and volunteers.
The spring 2012 issue of S.O. Safe profiles Police Chief Jim Chelel, Fire Chief Jeff Markey and two new members of the fire department. Readers also will find crime statistics and water quality test results. In addition, the newsletter provides information about events sponsored or co-sponsored by the Citizens Public Safety Committee, such as the third annual South Orange National Night Out on Aug. 7.
“A lot of things center around events,” Collum said of the committee’s work. There are 10 people on the committee, including Collum, Trustee Michael Goldberg and Tracey Randinelli, who serves as the newsletter editor.
“This was all volunteer, because we have no budget,” Collum said. “That’s why it’s online. We sent it to a lot of different neighborhood associations.” She said that people have been sharing the newsletter through their social media, and so far about 350 people have read the newsletter.
“Our goal is to get at least 1,000 readers,” she said.
