SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - The teams might not have been local, but that didn’t stop South Orange residents getting into the Super Bowl spirit.
As the Green Bay Packers battled the Pittsburgh Steelers, every play was being cheered from establishments such as Cryan’s Beef and Ale House, Gaslight Brewery and Bunny’s which hosted special parties and events for the game.
Cryan’s, perhaps the most popular student bar in the area, threw a Super Bowl party with prizes and giveaways.
“When you come in, for every drink you order we give you a ticket and all during the game we just give out prizes,” owner Jim Cryan said. “These start from a dart board set, a grill, a chair – all the stuff is tailgating stuff.
“We’ve got about 20 prizes, including the grand prize which is a trip for two to Las Vegas,” Cryan said.
Gaslight Brewery also followed the giveaway trend for the game on Sunday night, but they added their own unique touch.
“We’ll be having some prizes and giveaways throughout the game and we’ll also have a special buffet during halftime,” Gaslight employee Olivia said.
Bunny’s of South Orange, typically known as a sports-centered hangout, also planned Super Bowl events..
“We’re having prizes all throughout the game such as tickets for other sporting events and monetary gift certificates as well,” owner “Bunny” said.
One member of the community, a diehard New York Jets fan, said he refused to involve himself in anything Super Bowl-related as he was still too upset over the Jets’ getting eliminated from the playoffs by the Steelers.
“I’m not even watching the game,” Johnny Wallace said. “I’m still so disappointed because of two weeks ago.”
