The South Plainfield U13 team started its District baseball Tournament
Friday June 21 at the Edison Boys Baseball Club. In pool play, the Green
Machine went 2-1, defeating East Brunswick and Edison and losing to Monroe,
2 -1. The three pool play games were very close games. The Green Machine
scored six runs and only gave up four runs. The Green Machine pitchers (Jean
Sapini, Mike Stanczak, Ryan Stankan and Austin Feltham) were absolutely
terrific.

As the seconnd seed in the playoffs, South Plainfield played Edison. South
Plainfield once again received great pitching from Mike Stanczak, Ryan
Stankan and Billy Keane beating Edison, 4-0, and only giving up just two hits.
Leading the way in hitting and getting on base was Connor Adams, Mike
Stanczak and Austin Feltham. This set up a rematch against Monroe in the
finals. South Plainfield had never beaten Monroe in a District tournament
game the past 6 years.

In the Championship Game, South Plainfield and Monroe battled to a 1-1 tie
going into the top of the 5th when Luke Tamburro started off the inning with
a single, Conner Adams walked, Ryan Stankan hit into a fielders choice which
scored Luke Tamburro, then Billy Keane smacked a single which scored Ryan
Stankan. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Monroe started off with a single,
then Jean Sapini struck out the next two batters, but heavy rain and lightning
came, which postponed the championship game two days because of bad field
conditions. When the game re-started, Monroe's first batter hit a single that
scored the runner on second base, but that's all Monroe could do, and the next
batter flied out to end the inning. In the seventh inning, the Green Machine got
an insurance run when Connor Adams started off the inning with a walk, Billy
Keane also walked and Jean Sapini scored Connor Adams on a single. That set
up a bottom of the seventh inning no one will ever forget. Monroe's lead off
batter hit a double, but then Jean Sapini struck out the next three batters to
win the first District Championship for the U13 South Plainfield Green Machine,
4-2.

Players for the Green Machine are Connor (Superman) Adams, Andrew (Big Red)
Bisgaard, Austin (The Six Million Dollar Man) Feltham, Billy (The Rocket)
Keane, Jacob (Speedy) Rivera, Jean (Mean Jean) Sapini, Jack (The Hammer)
Scrudato, Mike (The Polish Hammer) Stanczak, Ryan (Ryno) Stankan, Luke (The
Duke) Tamburro, Niko (Tremendo) Vasquez, Brandon (Wiz Kid) Wizda & Connor
(The Kid) Wolpin,

The Manager of the Green Machine is Joe Scrudato and his assistant coaches
are John Wizda, Dan Tamburro, Angelo Rivera and Dave Delrio. Coach Scrudato
would like to thank all of his parents for their continued support, as well
as all of the SPJBC Board Members who attended the games.  A special thank you goes out to SPJBC Commissioner Pellegrino who attended the Championship game.

The U13 Green Machine is now going to the States in Bloomfield in two weeks.

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo (Citadel Press, 1970)

How does a reviewer do justice to a book called “the great American novel”? I first read Johnny Got His Gun during the Viet Nam war, when young people, nationwide, were protesting fighting in a war that was a senseless waste of life; a war in which the United States had no business participating.
