The James and Doris Boyle Memorial Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit founded 20 years ago by South Plainfield residents Jimmy Boyle, MaryAnn Boyle, and Robert and his wife Debbie Boyle in honor of their late parents. Extremely active in the community, James and Doris resided in South Plainfield for 48 years and spent much of that time giving back. They were involved with the Junior Baseball Club, Recreation Pony Tail, traveling softball, and numerous other organizations and Jim was a Grand Knight for Knights of Columbus Council #6203.

Over the years, Robert and Debbie, along with their children Michael, Megan and Patrick, have continued to carry out James and Doris’ service through the Boyle Memorial Foundation. The mission of the foundation is to make the lives of those in need better by relieving financial burdens and enable and encourage young people to follow their dreams.

To do so, the foundation holds fundraisers throughout the year and a majority of the scholarship money awarded to South Plainfield high school seniors in financial need comes from the annual golf tournament; over the past 19 years, over $100,000 has been raised and donated for scholarships through the golf tournament. Scholarships, which range from $500 to $1,000, are merited to those who are active in giving back to their community and, each year, anywhere from eight to 15 are awarded.

"We want to help high school students by enabling them, through scholarships, to help them afford college,” said Debbie Boyle, who serves as co-president of the foundation.

According to Debbie, the golf tournament is a lot of fun for a great cause. People who are repeat players over the years look forward to having the opportunity to play on a great county golf course and enjoying the delicious food that is served,” she said.

For more information on the 20th Annual James and Doris Memorial Golf Tournament, contact Robert Boyle at (908) 599-0699 or BoyleMemorialFund@gmail.com. Checks, made payable to James and Doris Boyle Memorial Fund, can be sent to Robert Boyle, 209 Van Fleet Avenue South Plainfield, NJ 07080. All donations are tax deductible (tax ID #22-3653785).

Prayers the Devil Answers by Sharyn McCrumb

Prayers the Devil Answers by Sharyn McCrumb (Altria, 2015)

Years later, after the tragedy, someone remembered the Dumb Supper and what had happened there. That was the cause of it, they said, because the ritual wasn't a game after all.
