SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – The 22nd Annual James and Doris Boyle Memorial Golf Tournament will take place at the Heron Glen Golf Course in Ringoes, NJ this year on Saturday, June 2, beginning at 1 p.m. The annual event, hosted for the past two decades by the South Plainfield-based Boyle Memorial Foundation, helps fund scholarships for the community’s high school seniors.
This year’s golf tournament will follow a Shotgun Best Ball format at a cost of $150 per person, which will include green fees and electric cart, driving range privileges and beverage cart followed by 18 holes of golf (soft spikes required) and an awards dinner. Prizes for various holes as well as closest to the line, closest to the pin and longest drive, among others, will be awarded.
Numerous sponsorship opportunities are also available and donations of various prizes are needed. Additionally, those who do not wish to play but would like to attend the dinner can do so at a cost of $40 per person.
The James and Doris Boyle Memorial Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit founded 20 years ago by South Plainfield residents Jimmy Boyle, MaryAnn Boyle, and Robert and his wife Debbie Boyle in honor of their late parents. Extremely active in the community, James and Doris resided in South Plainfield for 48 years and spent much of that time giving back. They were involved with the Junior Baseball Club, Recreation Pony Tail, traveling softball, and numerous other organizations and Jim was a Grand Knight for Knights of Columbus Council #6203.
Over the years, Robert and Debbie, along with their children Michael, Megan and Patrick, have continued to carry out James and Doris’ service through the Boyle Memorial Foundation. The mission of the foundation is to make the lives of those in need better by relieving financial burdens and enable and encourage young people to follow their dreams.
To do so, the foundation holds fundraisers throughout the year and a majority of the scholarship money awarded to South Plainfield high school seniors in financial need comes from the annual golf tournament; over the past 20 years, approximately $140,000 has been raised and donated for scholarships through the golf tournament. Each year, anywhere from eight to 15 scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,000 are awarded to students active in and dedicated to giving back to the community.
"We want to help high school students by enabling them, through scholarships, to help them afford college,” said the foundation's co-President Debbie Boyle, adding that the golf tournament is a lot of fun for a great cause. “People who are repeat players over the years look forward to having the opportunity to play on a great county golf course and enjoying the delicious food that is served,” she said.
