SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ - The South Plainfield Cultural Arts Commission, South Plainfield Middle School PTO, and the South Plainfield Suburban Woman’s Club will host the borough’s 3rd annual Spelling Bee at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7. The competition, which will be held at the South Plainfield Senior Center, is open to all fourth and fifth graders attending school or residing in the borough as well as those who are homeschooled.

The spelling contest is open to the first 30 students who register and will follow guidelines set forth by the New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs of GFWC and a Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary – 11th Edition will be used as the official spelling guide with words read of by a panel of judges. Three first place winners will be awarded gift cards and have the opportunity to move on to the state spelling bee, which will take place in the spring.

Participants will be required to follow standard spelling bee rules, which required them to pronounce the word, spell it and then pronounce it again. Those unsure of a word will have the opportunity to ask for its definition as well as have it used in a sentence. Contestants will be eliminated if they fail to spell a word correctly or for incorrect or missing capitalization.
