SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – The South Plainfield Senior Center and ACME Supermarket will team up this weekend for a special fundraising event.
From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, the Oak Tree Road supermarket will offer food, including a hot dog cart, as well as giveaways and raffle baskets. All donations from the event will benefit the Senior Center Breakfast Program.
“Our breakfast program has been struggling for past few months and we got in touch with Acme to see if they could lend a hand and they were extremely receptive and totally on board,” said Tree Olano, director of the South Plainfield Senior Center.
“We are hoping for a good turnout and encourage residents to come down and support this fundraiser for the senior center. We hope it is very successful,” said Steve Parenti, store manager of the South Plainfield ACME.
The South Plainfield Senior Center is open Monday through Friday (excluding certain holidays) and, each morning, a light breakfast of coffee, milk, assorted juices, bagels, toast, muffins, and cookies is available to members. While In-N-Out Bagel on Plainfield Avenue has been donating bagels every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and, on occasion, members bring in items to share, the bulk of the center's food donations come from the Piscataway-based FISH Hospitality Program.
According to Olano, while membership has increased significantly donations from FISH haven’t. In fact, she said, the amount of food the South Plainfield Senior Center is currently receiving has actually been reduced.
“Membership is up and we are going through food a lot faster these days,” Olano said. “While FISH is kind enough to donate to us and has been wonderful in the past and extremely generous, lately their suppliers have been donating to larger agencies. They cannot give what they don’t get.”
In an effort to continue the breakfast program, Olano reached out to ACME for assistance. ‘They were extremely receptive and totally on board,” she said. “All proceeds from Saturday will go directly to the seniors and our breakfast program.”
The fundraiser will run – rain or shine – at ACME of South Plainfield, 907 Oak Tree Road, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. For additional information, call (908) 822-7110.
“We are happy to be able to help out a local organization and do our part to support the town,” said Parenti.
