SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – Brandon Bernard scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the South Plainfield boys basketball team past JP Stevens of Edison, 54-50. South Plainfield jumped out to a 14-6 lead early in the first quarter and was able to hold off a JP Stevens flurry in the fourth quarter to win the game.
JP Stevens chipped away at the South Plainfield lead all game. South Plainfield led by eight after the first quarter, seven at half and six to start the fourth quarter. At the four-minute mark of the fourth quarter JP Stevens’ Shlok Garg’s three point shot brought JP Stevens to within one, but South Plainfield’s defense in the closing minutes created turnovers that enabled the Tigers to put the game away. In addition to Bernard, South Plainfield received 10 points from Roemello Monroe, nine points from Jordan Hankerson and eight points from Malik Cisson. Cisson also contributed seven rebounds for the Tigers in a winning effort.
JP Stevens’ forward Francois Ballou led all scorers with 21 points. The victory brings South Plainfield to 2-2 on the season, and 1-1 in the Anthony J. Cotoia Holiday Basketball Tournament.
