Looking for something to do on a Monday night?  Come join us for our Monday Night Movies at the library!  Pull up a chair, and we will give you some popcorn, as you sit back and enjoy some brand new releases.  This coming movie on January 30 is based on a book by the same name written by Rosalie Ham and stars Kate Winslet, Judy Davis, Liam Hemsworth, and Hugo Weaving.  Winslet plays a woman named Tilly Dunnage, who returns to a rural Australian town to care for her mother (Davis).  Tilly makes beautiful and exquisite dresses for the women of the town, all the while exacting revenge for a long ago wrong.  This movie begins promptly at 6:30 PM and will also be shown on Wednesday, February 1 at 12:30 PM.  Keep in mind that this particular title is rated R for brief language and some violence.

Interested in joining a book club? You are in luck since the library has 3 book clubs for adults!  Each club meets at 4 PM on their respective day.  We have a Tuesday afternoon book club, a Mystery book club that meets on Wednesday, and a Thursday afternoon book club.  Come by the library or check out our website for the list of books each group is reading and the schedule of the meetings.  All books for the clubs are available behind the circulation desk if you are interested in attending.

We also have an English conversation group that we will be starting soon for ESL students and other learners who want to practice speaking in an informal setting.  If you or someone you know would like to join the group, please stop by the Reference Desk or call 908-754-7885 x3 to leave your name, phone number, and availability (morning, afternoon, or evening).

A new addition to the lineup of children’s programs is Meditation & Mindfulness for Kids, which meets (most) Thursdays at 7 PM.  This is intended for children ages 7-12.  Check the schedule on the website or call us at 908-754-7885 to ask about the dates.

On Thursday, February 2 at 6:30 PM, there will be a kid craft for ages 5 and up.  We will be making Valentine’s Day owls out of recycled CDs.  Registration is required and all materials will be provided.  You can sign up either in the library or by calling us at 908-754-7885.

On Saturday, February 4, we will be celebrating the Chinese New Year!  Come join us at the Senior Center at 90 Maple Avenue for our Chinese New Year Family Event from 12-3:30 PM.  The event will start with a Lion Dance performance and continue with many other activities, such as fan painting, a choral performance, DIY stations, and MORE!  This program is presented by the South Plainfield Public Library along with Buddha’s Light International Association of NJ and the South Plainfield Cultural Arts Commission.  No registration is required for this celebration.

New to the library are Teen Movie afternoons!  On Friday, February 17 at 3:30 PM, with an encore presentation on Saturday, February 25 at 2:30 PM, we will be showing a dark fantasy based on the book by Ransom Riggs.  The main character Jacob finds himself at a home owned by a woman with special powers who watches over children known as Peculiars.  It is rated PG-13.

Keep an eye out for a new display!  Coming in February will be a Blind Date with a Book display containing some of our Young Adult collection.  You definitely cannot judge a book by its cover since everything will be covered up!  Choose a book based on its brief description, and see if your Blind Date is a keeper or a dud!

As always, we will be having our normal storytime schedule.  Storytime for 2’s & 3’s is on Wednesday and Thursday at 10:30 AM.  Storytime for those 3 and up is on Tuesday at 10:30 AM, Wednesday at 6:30 PM, and Thursday at 1:15 PM.  There are also two sessions of Babytime on Friday, at 10:15 AM and 11:15 AM.  A newer addition to the storytime lineup is our Saturday Family Storytime at 11 AM, which is intended for children of all ages.

We have many other children’s programs going on, such as the LEGO Builder’s Club for ages 7 and up that is held Monday and Thursday from 3:30-5 PM.  Puzzles & Games for ages 3 and up takes place Tuesday at 11:30 AM (right after storytime!), and there is also a Kid’s Corner Book Club for ages 8-10 on Monday night at 6:30 PM.  The Beginner Book Club for ages 6-8 will meet Thursday, February 16 at 6:30 PM.  In addition, we have a Teen Book Club (for teens 13 and up) that meets every third Thursday at 7 PM.  We will be discussing Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard on February 16.

Library hours are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday 10 AM-9 PM, Tuesday and Friday 10 AM-6 PM, Saturday 9 AM-5 PM, and Sunday 1:30-5 PM.

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote (Random House, 1965)

In Cold Blood is, quite simply, the grand-daddy of true crime writing, dubbed by Capote, himself, as the first non-fiction novel (although Norman Mailer argued the point when he published The Executioner's Song in 1979.) The conditions under which I read In Cold Blood for the first time were pretty weird, which was another ...
