As we pass the midpoint of February, and try to adjust to the highly-variable weather (“Is just my jacket OK today, or do I put on my Arctic survival gear?), let’s look at the latest news from South Plainfield Library:

The Library will be closed on Sunday and Monday in observance of President’s Day.

As part of our observance of Black History Month, we’ll be presenting two special movie presentations on the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960’s.  The first one will be shown this Saturday afternoon at 12:30, with the second one next Saturday afternoon at 1:00.  Each one will be shown free of charge, and no pre-registration is required.

Once again, we’ve got a very packed schedule of programming for kids and young people coming next week.  Starting with the kids’ programs, Saturday morning at 11:00, we have our “Saturday Storytime” program for all ages. Our regular “Storytime” program for children age 3 & over will be held on Tuesday morning at 10:30, Wednesday evening at 6:30, and Thursday afternoon at 1:15.  The Tuesday “Storytime” will be followed at 11:30 with our “Puzzles & Games Playtime”, also for children age 3 & over.  “Toddler Time”, for children age 2 & 3, will be held on Wednesday and Thursday mornings at 10:30.  On Thursday afternoon, we’ll also have the “LEGO Builders Club”, for children age 7-12, at 3:30.  Later on Thursday evening at 7:00, we’ll have the “Meditation & Mindfulness for Kids” program, also for children age 7-12.  Then, on Friday, we’ll have our two “Babytime” programs for children age 2 & under: the 10:15 program for kids who can’t walk on their own, and the 11:15 program for those who can.  Each of these programs is being presented free, with no pre-registration required.
We’ve also scheduled some special programs for young people next week.  On Wednesday afternoon at 3:30, there’s the “Tween Graphic Novel Club” for young people age 10 & over.  They’ll be discussing Roller Girl by Victoria Jameson.  Then, on Thursday night at 7:00, we’re holding our first “Special Needs Sensory Storytime” program for both children and young people.  This program is geared towards those with special needs who might be uncomfortable with the standard “Storytime”.  And next Saturday, we’ll be showing a movie for teens at 3:00.  Young people under age 13 are permitted to attend with parental permission.  You’ll have to call us for title & content information, but we can say that it’s a recently-released fantasy movie from director Tim Burton about a school for children with paranormal abilities.  (No, it’s not Hogwarts or Xavier’s school; those are different franchises.)  Each of these programs is being presented free, and you don’t need to sign up in advance.  For more information, please call and ask Miss Mija or Miss Audrey.

Just to show that we haven’t forgotten our adult patrons, the next meeting of the “Thursday Book Club” is scheduled for next Thursday afternoon at 4:00.  Attendees will be discussing A Hundred Summers by Beatriz Wiliams.  You don’t need to sign up in advance for this program.

We’ve got room for a couple of extra announcements.  First, in response to patron requests, we’re now labelling new additions to our audiobook collection.  Those titles now have a “NEW” sticker on the spine, just like the books do.  Space permitting, we’ll be keeping these on the display racks on the audiobook shelves; otherwise, they’ll be interfiled with the rest of the collection.  The new titles will circulate for the usual two-week period.

Second, we ask that patrons please keep a close eye on their personal items.  While we have been fortunate that our library has been safe for both patrons and staff, it’s best if you try to be extra careful with your things.  Please do not leave them unattended.  If you need any help with this, please ask a staff member at the desk for assistance.

That’s about all for now.  If you have any questions or comments, fell free to give us a call at (908) 754-7885.  For more information, you can check our website at or our Facebook page at  Catch you later.

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote (Random House, 1965)

In Cold Blood is, quite simply, the grand-daddy of true crime writing, dubbed by Capote, himself, as the first non-fiction novel (although Norman Mailer argued the point when he published The Executioner's Song in 1979.) The conditions under which I read In Cold Blood for the first time were pretty weird, which was another ...
