Well, for those of you who keep track of such things, we still have another three weeks of summer to go.  However, I’m sure most of you figure it really finishes up this Monday, right after the South Plainfield fireworks.  So, as we enter Labor Day weekend and the end of vacation season, let’s pause for news from South Plainfield Library:

Be advised that the Library will be closed on Sunday and Monday in observance of Labor Day.  You should also know that our Sunday operating hours (1:30-5PM) will return the following Sunday, Sept. 10th.

Turning to the children’s programming, we have…not much.  After the hectic Summer Reading period, we’re taking a break with our children’s programs for September.  They’ll be back starting Tuesday, Oct. 2nd.  Please understand that the Children’s Room will still be open and our staff will still be on duty, so the kids can still stop by and visit.

Due to our Monday closing, we won’t be showing our “Monday Night Movie” or our “Wednesday Afternoon Movie”.  They’ll return the following week.  You can pick up an updated movie schedule at the Reference Desk.  Also, due to the Monday closing, we won’t be offering Job Search Skills Coaching.

So, are we doing anything else besides checking stuff in and out?  Well, we do have a program coming up on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 9th.  We’ll be offering the second of four lectures on Impressionism in art.  This time, Dr. Michael Norris of Armchair Art Tours will be talking about Impressionist works based around water.  The program starts at 2:00.  It’s being presented free, but you need to pre-register.

Be sure to mark your calendars as we once again transform the Multi-Purpose Room into the Bargain Basement.  We’ll be holding another Friends of the Library Book & Bake Sale starting on Saturday, Sept. 23rd.  The bake sale will be held that day, while the book sale will run until Sept. 30th, or we run out of inventory (whichever comes first).  We’re currently accepting donations of books and A/V items (in good condition!) for the sale.  Please call us if you want to sign up for the bake sale.  And, staying on the subject of sales, we’re still offering Summer Reading T-shirts ($5.75 each) and tote bags ($1.00 each) while supplies last.  (And, no, we don’t have any Library eclipse glasses for the one coming in about 70 years.)

Well, we have room for a couple of advisories.  First of all, we realize that, sometimes, you may glance at one of our books, but decide not to borrow it.  If that’s the case, please don’t try to re-shelve it.  There are times when the question of where a book is placed can get a bit tricky, especially when it comes to non-fiction or the special collections.  Instead, just leave the item on one of the tables or on one of the specially-marked carts.  We’ll take care of putting it back.  (Don’t worry, it’s no trouble at all.  That’s what we’re paid for.)

Second, just a reminder about our computers.  They’ve been programmed to be available to the public for almost the entire period we’re open each day.  Approximately five minutes before we close for the day, the computers will begin to automatically shut down.  We can’t override it; it’s pretty much hardwired into the system.  So, if you’re using a computer near the end of the day, please be aware of your time.  If you’re working on something, finish up.  If you need to save something, make sure to do it while you can.  We’ll do our best to make sure you receive fair warning of your remaining time.

That’s about all for now.  You can check our website at or our Facebook page at for more information.  Or you could just give us a call at (908) 754-7885.  Catch you later.

The Woman in the Window by A.J. Finn

The Woman in the Window by A.J. Finn (William Morrow, 2018)

A friend, whose opinion on literature I respect greatly, reported to me recently that she had just finished reading A.J. Finn's debut novel, The Woman in the Window. Of it she said, “I wish I hadn't finished it,” which I interpreted to mean, “It was so good I'm sorry that I finished it.” ...
