The South Plainfield Library is all about learning, growing, and doing.  If you're in school, we'll help you find just the right information to help you succeed in your classes, but learning doesn't stop when you graduate.  You are certainly aware that there are books available on nearly any topic (or we can request them from another library for you) but we have plenty of other learning opportunities.

The Great Courses will be instructive to both visual and auditory learners, because they are available on DVD and CD.  The DVDs focus on topics you want to see, such as art history, gardening, cooking and travelogues.  The CDs are perfect for less visual topics, such as business success and stress relief.  There is a topic to pique everyone's interest.

For more extensive instruction, turn to the online sources.  Explore Universal Class to learn about psychology, real estate, writing or just about anything else.  Find test prep options on the Testing and Education Reference Center (lots of other good information to explore there, too). Learn language through Rosetta Stone and Transparent Language.

We offer plenty of in-person learning, too.  If you are over 14 and would like to learn to crochet, come to the classes every other Saturday at 10:00 am.  The next class is on November 18.  When you register, you will get a list of the materials needed.

If you'd like to learn about art, have fun, socialize and meet new people all at the same time, you won't want to miss "Adult Paint Night" on Thursday, November 16 at 7:00 pm.  You'll create a nighttime landscape using oil pastels and watercolors while learning about the life and artwork of Vincent Van Gogh from an instructor at the Art Kids Academy. Space is limited for this great program; please sign up in advance.

For enjoying and appreciating art, you can't do better than with an Armchair Art Tour. "Impressionism and America" is the last in the series; it will be on Saturday, November 18 at 2:00 pm. Registration is required.  As French Impressionism waned in the 1890s, American Impressionism strengthened. We'll see how collectors' tastes, overseas travel by artists, and domestic art colonies helped inspire works of art by impressionists such as Mary Cassatt, Childe Hassam, and William Merritt Chase.

Sometimes, learning means remembering what you already know.  If you've enjoyed listening to music over the past decades, be sure to be at the library on Sunday, November 19 at 2:30 pm. You'll "Remember Then" when you hear all the greatest hits of the late 1950s through the early 1970s.  Songs such as "In the Still of the Night" and "Under the Boardwalk" will take you on a musical journey through genres including doo wop, Motown, classic soul and many more.  Sign up to be part of the fun!

Don't forget all the other learning that goes on at the library. If you would like to improve your computer skills, the library is the place to be.  Whether you want to develop your word processing ability or get started using email for the first time, make an appointment with a librarian to get personalized instruction. You can also make an appointment to put you in touch with volunteers who can help you develop your job search skills.

English language learners will want to be sure to join our conversation groups.  Every Monday at 10:30 am, eager students gather to have fun while practicing speaking skills. If you or someone you know is just learning to speak English, come join in! We would like to start a second session in December.  Is Tuesday from 1:00-3:00 is a convenient time? Please sign up at the front desk, or let us know what time is best for you.

Please be aware that the library will be closed on Thursday and Friday, November 23 and 24 in observance of Thanksgiving.

Come to your library to learn and grow!

South Plainfield received over two inches of rain this past weekend. Fortunately, Mother Nature has cooperated, and the precipitation was not of the frozen variety. Despite the rain, nothing could put a damper on South Plainfield’s spirit of helping those in need.

On Saturday a few Borough employees and I had the opportunity to deliver funds that have been raised for a family that has ...
