Did you miss a movie that you wanted to see in the theaters and don’t want to pay to rent it or for the DVD? Come to “Monday Night Movies” at the library.  It’s all the fun of a movie theater but none of the cost.  We are showing brand new releases every Monday night and we will be providing popcorn for all who attend. This week’s movie stars Brie Larson, Woody Harrelson and Naomi Watts. Raised in a chaotic, ever-changing home by her imaginative but alcoholic father and artistic but often depressed mother, Jeannette Walls (Larson) has never truly known stability. As she moves around the country with her family (Harrelson and Watts), she faces poverty, confusion, near homelessness and bullying by classmates who do not understand her circumstances. However, Jeanette's father always tries to inspire hope for the future in his children, even though he is largely responsible for the upheaval and uncertainty in their lives. Jeanette holds those dreams for the future close, through good times and bad. This movie is rated PG-13. The movie that is shown on Monday night will also be shown again on the subsequent Wednesday at 12:30 pm for those that can’t make the Monday night showing or don’t like to drive at night.  Stop by the library and pick up a schedule of the movies being shown.

The library is once again partnering again with the South Plainfield’s Social Services Department to help our community this holiday season! We've set up an Angel Tree with ornaments representing local families in need. If you'd like to help please stop by the library to choose an ornament from the tree and register as a gift-giving 'Angel'. Gifts should be new and unwrapped, and brought in to the library with the tag that you’ve chosen by Thursday, December 14th.  If there are any questions, please call the library.

On Saturday at 2pm, the South Plainfield Public Library welcomes back Dr. Michael Norris of Armchair Art Tours and former museum educator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art to continue his series of Impressionism talks.  The fourth and final talk is entitled “Impressionism and America”.  As French Impressionism waned in the 1890s, American Impressionism strengthened, going strong right into the 1920s.  We’ll see how collectors’ tastes, overseas travel by artists, and domestic art colonies helped inspire works of art by American Impressionists such as Mary Cassatt, Childe Hassam, and William Merritt Chase. Come celebrate art and view amazing artwork with Dr. Norris and the South Plainfield Public Library! Please register by calling the South Plainfield Public Library at 908-754-7885 or stop by.

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo (Citadel Press, 1970)

How does a reviewer do justice to a book called “the great American novel”? I first read Johnny Got His Gun during the Viet Nam war, when young people, nationwide, were protesting fighting in a war that was a senseless waste of life; a war in which the United States had no business participating.
