The library will be closed Sunday, November 11 and Monday, November 12 in observance of Veterans Day.

The library will be open on Saturday, November 10; if you come you will be transported to 19th century France in an Armchair Art tour. Explore the world of Paul Cézanne, a painter whose artistic goals took him beyond his Impressionist beginnings as he expressively combined geometric shapes and planes of color. Dr. Michael Norris’s illustrated lecture begins at 2:00 pm.

The Harry Potter series is 20 years old and we are celebrating.  The first event is the House Cup Games.  If you are 7 years old or older AND you’ve read the books or watched the movies, come on Friday, November 16 at 3:30 pm. You’ll be sorted into the correct house to compete in a battle of wits to win the House Cup. You must register in advance for this program—but Hagrid won’t be coming to escort you.

The entire family—adults and children—will get into the Harry Potter spirit on Saturday, November 17. At 2:00 pm, the troop of actors known as Raconteur Radio presents Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, a uniquely immersive, parody interpretation. Come in costume if you like and experience the story in a whole new way, told through dialogue, sound effects, and music. They add costumes, colored spotlights, a fatboy Elvis mic, a fog machine and a strobe light! This program will be held at the Senior Center. Please sign up in advance—you don’t want to miss this!

We have a new ESL conversation group. It will meet Thursday evenings at 7:00 pm through December 20.  There will also be a session Monday, November 19 at 7:00 pm because the library will be closed that Thursday for Thanksgiving.

If you are an English Language Learner and evenings are not convenient for you, there are also groups that meet on Mondays at 10:30 am and on Thursdays at 1:00 pm.  You are welcome to come to one, two, or all three.

The story time schedule has changed a little this past month.  There is now a third session of Baby Time on Saturdays at 10:00 am.  Babies and toddlers up to the age of 2 years love this pre-literacy experience with its songs, rhymes and finger plays.  There are also sessions at 10:15 and 11:15 on Friday mornings.

Children 2-3 years old enjoy Toddler Time Wednesday and Thursday mornings at 10:30 am.  Story time and a craft for children ages 3 and up happens on Tuesdays at 10:30. This month, Wednesday evening story time meets only on November 28 (6:30 pm)

Wednesday night, November 14, children ages 4 and up should head to the South Plainfield Senior Center at 6:30 pm.  Petra Puppets will be presenting Animal Games! A team of uproarious “animal” athletes are getting ready to compete with the kids in extreme pickle balancing, champion banana wrestling (my bet’s on the chimpanzee for that one), and the ultimate chicken challenge! The program is sponsored by the Friends of the Library and admission is free.  Please consider bringing a non-perishable food or personal care item to donate to the South Plainfield Food Pantry.

Children of any age are welcome at any of our bi-lingual story times.  Cuentos y canciones/stories and songs in Spanish and English is held on Mondays at 6:30 (but not November 12 when the library is closed). Ms. Kitty leads Chinese/English story time on Tuesday afternoons at 4:30 pm. Ms. Maria tells racconti in Italiano in Italian and English on Thursday afternoons at 3:30.

If you’re in 7th grade and up, you still have time to read Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi in time for the next meeting of the Pizza and Pages book group, which will be Thursday, November 15 at 3:30 pm. Discuss this thrilling tale of a girl whose touch has lethal powers while munching on some pizza. The book is available at the reference desk.

Boys, Books, and Bagels is a new book club for boys ages 8 - 12 years old. Pick up this month's title at the circulation desk, read it at home, and come on Monday, November 19 at 3:00 pm. Be prepared to discuss what you have read and enjoy some snacks during the discussion.

There is also a new book club for girls ages 8-12.  The first meeting of Girls, Goodies, and Great Adventures is on Monday, November 26 at 3:00 pm. Books are available ahead of time and snacks will be available during the discussion.

It’s November—days are shorter and the weather is chillier, but the library is always a warm and welcoming place.  Hope to see you soon and often!
