Do you do a lot of shopping at Amazon?  Did you know that you can help the South Plainfield Public Library when you shop there?  It is very simple and is for a great cause.  All you have to do is designate the Friends of the South Plainfield Public Library as your charity and shop on!  You go to smile.amazon.com (it’s exactly the same as amazon.com, but this is the charity site) and in the pick your own charitable organization box type in Friends of the South Plainfield Public Library and click “Search”.  Select the Friends as your designated organization and shop away. The Friends of the Library will receive 0.5% from every eligible purchase you make through the Amazon Smile program.  If there’s any questions, stop by the library and pick up a flyer.

Our groundbreaking ceremony was a great success and now that the project is underway, our library has over 80,000 materials that will need a new home in our new building.  The library is holding a fundraiser for new shelving to hold our collection.  We are asking families to consider sponsoring a shelf.  The $100 donation will help us purchase new shelving for our collection.  Your name will be placed on a plaque to recognize your contribution.  If you would like to donate, please come by the library and pick up a flyer to fill out.  Checks can be made payable to the South Plainfield Public Library Foundation.

Missed a movie you wanted to see in the theaters and don’t want to pay for the DVD?  Come to “Monday Night Movies” at the library.  It’s all the fun of a movie theater but none of the cost.  We are showing brand new releases every Monday night and we will be providing popcorn for all who attend.  This week’s movie stars Pierce Brosnan and Emma Thompson as a divorced couple who have their retirement money stolen from them.  Richard (Pierce Brosnan) enlists his ex-wife Kate (Emma Thompson) to help him track down the shady businessman behind the fraud. Soon, they're caught up in a cat-and-mouse caper that has them traveling all around Europe in a whirlwind of intrigue, mad chases and a jewelry theft that might restore Richard's future while rekindling his romance with Kate.  There is no registration required.  You can call the library for title information or stop by and pick up a schedule of all the upcoming movies.

Local author Emilio Dabul will address the topic of “Why Syria Matters” at the South Plainfield Public Library on Thursday, October 9th, at 7:00 pm. He will do a reading from his recently completed novel, Achmed Remembers, which deals with the Syrian civil war from a child’s perspective. In addition, he will also discuss other fiction and nonfiction works relevant to the conflict why the final outcome of what happens in this country is so relevant to the US and the rest of the world. Dabul’s paternal grandparents were from a small village outside Damascus and he still has many relatives in the region. He is a resident of South Plainfield.  This program is presented free and no registration is required.

On Thursday October 16th at 6:30 pm the Library is presenting a special program on Diwali.  Join us as we learn about the Festival of Lights!  You will experience the excitement of Diwali through Indian stories, crafts, music and dance.  This program is best suited for children ages 5 and up.  This program will be held at the South Plainfield Senior Center.  Registration is required and space is limited.  On Saturday October 18th there is going to be pumpkin painting at the library.  Parents and kids can drop in anytime between 9:30am-12pm.  You need to provide the pumpkin and we will provide the rest.  All ages are welcome to attend and there is no registration required.

If you can’t get to the library because you are pregnant, don’t drive, or are ill, and still would like to be able to get library materials, then sign up for our homebound delivery service.  You call us to sign up and tell us what you would like to read and we will match you with a volunteer.  We will pick out books for you, check them out and then deliver them to your door.  When you are done the volunteer will pick them up and bring them back to the library along with any requests for other books.   If you have any questions about this service or want to sign up, please give us a call at 908-754-7885.

The Library has started 3 book clubs for adults who are interested in reading and discussing books.  We have a Tuesday afternoon group that meets at 4pm.  The next meeting is going to be on October 14th, where they will be discussing Imperial Woman by Pearl S Buck. There is also Thursday evening book club.  The next meeting will be on October 23th where they will be discussing Orange is the New Black by Piper Kerman.  Our third book club is our Mystery Book Club. The next meeting of the South Plainfield Mystery Book Club will be on Wednesday October 15th at 4pm.  The book that they will be discussing is Death of a Political Plant by Ann Ripley.  If you are interested in attending any of these book clubs and need a copy of the book that is being discussed stop by the library.

Do you have questions about social security? Come to the library on Thursday October 16th at 7pm.  Daniel Rodgers from Merrill Lynch will be presenting a program about potential strategies for maximizing your benefits.  He will discuss who is eligible for benefits, factors to consider before taking benefits and when is the appropriate time to start taking benefits.  This program is presented free and no registration is required.

Get involved with your library and become a Friend!  The Friends of the South Plainfield Public Library are looking for new members!  This group will hold fundraisers that help the library with programming, and have special programs.  They also provide the discounted museum passes that are extremely popular.  All are welcome to join; you do not need to be a resident of South Plainfield.  If you are interested please come to the library to pick up an application or download one from our website.

We will be following our regular schedule for the children’s programs. The Storytime program for 2s & 3s is held Wednesday and Thursday mornings at 10:30.  Storytime for ages 3 and up is held Tuesday mornings at 10:30, Wednesday night at 6:30, and Thursday afternoon at 1:15.  Friday Fun is every Friday from 3-5pm.  This program is for ages 7 and up only.  These programs do not require registration.

There is going to be a new Babytime schedule going forward. We want to make sure everyone has an enjoyable and positive experience, so we are trying something new. Our The Babytime program has become so popular that it has become necessary for us to have 2 sessions; one for walkers (more active babies) and non-walkers.  Non-walkers will be first on Fridays from 10:15am-11am.  There will be 20-25 minutes of songs and rhymes followed by 20-25 minutes of play.  Walkers will follow from 11:15am-12:15pm.  There will be 25-30 minutes of songs, rhymes and finger plays followed by 25-30 minutes of play.  If you have both a non-walker and walker, please use your judgment and pick the session that you think would be most appropriate.

Prayers the Devil Answers by Sharyn McCrumb (Altria, 2015)

Years later, after the tragedy, someone remembered the Dumb Supper and what had happened there. That was the cause of it, they said, because the ritual wasn't a game after all. It really was magic, but magic has rules, and she broke them. Even when they call it a 'senseless tragedy,' people always try to find a ...
