Do you do a lot of shopping at Amazon? Did you know that you can help the South Plainfield Public Library when you shop there? It is very simple and is for a great cause. All you have to do is designate the Friends of the South Plainfield Public Library as your charity and shop on! You go to smile.amazon.com (it’s exactly the same as amazon.com, but this is the charity site) and in the pick your own charitable organization box type in Friends of the South Plainfield Public Library and click “Search”. Select the Friends as your designated organization and shop away. The Friends of the Library will receive 0.5% from every eligible purchase you make through the Amazon Smile program. If there’s any questions, stop by the library and pick up a flyer.
Our groundbreaking ceremony was a great success and now that the project is underway, our library has over 80,000 materials that will need a new home in our new building. The library is holding a fundraiser for new shelving to hold our collection. We are asking families to consider sponsoring a shelf. The $100 donation will help us purchase new shelving for our collection. Your name will be placed on a plaque to recognize your contribution. If you would like to donate, please come by the library and pick up a flyer to fill out. Checks can be made payable to the South Plainfield Public Library Foundation.
Missed a movie you wanted to see in the theaters and don’t want to pay for the DVD? Come to “Monday Night Movies” at the library. It’s all the fun of a movie theater but none of the cost. We are showing brand new releases every Monday night and we will be providing popcorn for all who attend. This week’s movie features the characters Mr. Peabody and Sherman from the 1960s animated television series The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show. Mr. Peabody, the most accomplished dog in the world, and his mischievous boy Sherman, use their time machine - the WABAC - to go on the most outrageous adventures. But when Sherman takes the WABAC out for a joyride to impress his friend Penny, they accidentally rip a hole in the universe, wreaking havoc on the most important events in world history. Before they forever alter the past, present and future, Mr. Peabody must come to their rescue. Together, the time traveling trio will make their mark on history. Schools are closed on Tuesday November 4th for Election Day, so this is the perfect movie to bring your kids to! There is no registration required. You can call the library for title information or stop by and pick up a schedule of all the upcoming movies.
The Library will be closing at 6pm on Monday November 10th for the Library Board of Trustees Meeting. The movie that was originally scheduled for that day will be pushed to Monday November 17th. The Library is closed on Tuesday November 11th for Veteran’s Day. We will reopen on Wednesday November 12th at 10am. On Thursday November 13th at 7 pm the Library is presenting a program entitled “Riskonomics: What You Need to Know to Help Maximize Your Retirement Income”. Join us as Asia Hollis, a Financial Services Representative from First Investors Corporation will offer advice on what you can do to potentially enhance your retirement income while helping to minimize risk. This program is presented free and no registration is required.
If you can’t get to the library because you are pregnant, don’t drive, or are ill, and still would like to be able to get library materials, then sign up for our homebound delivery service. You call us to sign up and tell us what you would like to read and we will match you with a volunteer. We will pick out books for you, check them out and then deliver them to your door. When you are done the volunteer will pick them up and bring them back to the library along with any requests for other books. If you have any questions about this service or want to sign up, please give us a call at 908-754-7885.
Get involved with your library and become a Friend! The Friends of the South Plainfield Public Library are looking for new members! We will be following our regular schedule for the children’s programs. The Storytime program for 2s & 3s is held Wednesday and Thursday mornings at 10:30. Storytime for ages 3 and up is held Tuesday mornings at 10:30, Wednesday night at 6:30, and Thursday afternoon at 1:15. Friday Fun is every Friday from 3-5pm. This program is for ages 7 and up only. These programs do not require registration.
There is going to be a new Babytime schedule going forward. We want to make sure everyone has an enjoyable and positive experience, so we are trying something new. Our The Babytime program has become so popular that it has become necessary for us to have 2 sessions; one for walkers (more active babies) and non-walkers. Non-walkers will be first on Fridays from 10:15am-11am. There will be 20-25 minutes of songs and rhymes followed by 20-25 minutes of play. Walkers will follow from 11:15am-12:15pm. There will be 25-30 minutes of songs, rhymes and finger plays followed by 25-30 minutes of play. If you have both a non-walker and walker, please use your judgment and pick the session that you think would be most appropriate.
