Time for some more news from South Plainfield Library:

First, just a note that we will be open on Mother’s Day, this Sunday.  Treating your Mom to a visit to the library may not be common, but feel free to start a trend.

Our next Monday Night Movie is scheduled for this Monday night at 6:30.  There’s no charge for admission or for the popcorn.  Please call us for title and content information.  We can say that the movie is an Oscar-nominated biopic starring Jennifer Lawrence as woman who founded her own business empire, and no post-apocalypse games are featured.  And if you miss the Monday showing, we’ll run it again on Wednesday afternoon at 12:15.

We’ll have a revised schedule of children’s programs next week. Starting with the story programs, “Storytime”, for children age 3 & over, will be held on Tuesday morning at 10:30 and Thursday afternoon at 1:15.  “Toddler Time”, for children age 2 & 3, will be held on Wednesday and Thursday morning at 10:30.  “Babytime, Article the First”, for children under age 2 who can’t walk on their own, will be held on Friday morning at 10:15.  It’ll be followed by “Babytime, Article the Second”, for children under age 2 who can walk on their own, at 11:15.  Then, on Saturday morning, we’ll have our family “Saturday Storytime” at 11:00.  Each of these programs last between 45 minutes and an hour, and features stories, songs and a craft activity for older kids.  Each of them is presented free; no pre-registration is required.

As far as the revisions go, we’ll only have one LEGO program this week; it’s the LEGO Duplo program on Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 and it’s for kids age 3-5.  Also, our Wednesday night “Storytime” has been bumped.  Instead, we’ll be featuring the children’s program “Kid’s Music That Rocks”, featuring Mr. Ray.  That program starts at 6:30, and it’s for children of all ages.  Instead of an admission fee, we ask that you bring non-perishable food items for the Middlesex County Community Food Drive.  And we’ll have our “Friday Fun” program at its usual time on Friday afternoon from 3-5.  It’s for kids age 7 & over and features games and activities.  If you’d like more information, please check with Miss Mija.

The Library Board of Trustees will have their next meeting on Tuesday night at 6:30.  Members of the public are welcome to attend and learn more about the Library’s current & future plans.  No pre-registration is required.  There will be a public comment time midway through the meeting, before New Business is addressed.

We realize that the demands of work and other activities, plus just plain unexpected circumstances, can sometimes result in patrons not having time to finish reading that book or watching that video before it’s due.  If that happens, though, don’t forget that you can still renew them for another loan period.  There are a number of ways you can do this.  You can call us during regular operating hours and speak to someone at Circulation.  Or, you can log onto your account through our website.  And you can try Elvis, our telephone renewal system (no, it’s not based in Graceland) at (908) 757-3280.  Be advised, though, that for the latter two you’ll need the barcode number from your Library card handy, and you’ll also need your PIN number to access your computerized records.  Also, items that are reserved by another patron can’t be renewed, and that some items (like new DVDs) have limited renewals.  Check with us if you need more details.

That’s all for this week.  For more information, you can check our aforementioned website at www.southplainfield.lib.nj.us, or our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/southplainfieldlibrary.  And you can call us at (908) 754-7885.  Or you can just stop by and ask us in person; we appreciate the visit.  Catch you later.

Prayers the Devil Answers by Sharyn McCrumb

Prayers the Devil Answers by Sharyn McCrumb (Altria, 2015)

Years later, after the tragedy, someone remembered the Dumb Supper and what had happened there. That was the cause of it, they said, because the ritual wasn't a game after all. It really was magic, but magic has rules, and she broke them. Even when they call it a 'senseless tragedy,' people always try to find a ...
