WASHINGTONVILLE, NY - Brotherhood Winery is a true experience in the art of winemaking. As the oldest winery in North America, their history is as rich as the wonderful wines they produce. Located in Washingtonville - the heart of the Hudson Valley - Brotherhood Winery is an extraordinary day trip.

Whether you are a wine connoisseur, wish to learn about the production of wine and champagne or just want to enjoy the beautiful area, Brotherhood Winery is a very pleasing venue.   The country setting boasts a charming village with historical buildings and fascinating artifacts.

Take advantage of Brotherhood’s guided tours that are offered several times each day. Tours take you through the vast network of underground cellars that were excavated by hand in the late 19th Century. These dimly lit cellars house over 200 oak barrels and feature a crested vault containing some of the oldest vintages in America.

Brotherhood has experienced years of glamour but also its share of struggles. The winery started when John Jaques, who planted grapes in Orange County, New York, produced his first commercial wine in 1839. Brotherhood established a remarkable network of prominent customers and their close ties to churches allowed them to make sacramental and medicinal wines in the late 19th century. In fact, it is the production of wines for church communities that allowed Brotherhood to continue to be a viable business when alcohol was taboo during the Prohibition era and when the economy failed in the Great Depression.

Brotherhood Winery has been owned by a number of families over the centuries including the Emersons and the Farrells. It was the Farrell family that turned the winery into a popular tourist attraction in the 1960's bringing thousands of visitors to the venue annually.

Brotherhood has always maintained its integrity and excellent reputation for fine wines. Their foray into premium vinifera wine production and private label contract packaging began in the mid-1980s. And today, Brotherhood Winery continues to increase its production and gain prominence in worldwide markets through a process of modernization, restoration and expansion that began in 2005.

When you visit, you can also sample a selection of Brotherhood's fine wines in their spacious and charming tasting room or in their outdoor wine garden.  There you can choose from one of three tasting “flights.” We also suggest you make some purchases from their gift shop to sip and savor when you return home.

Brotherhood produces New York premium selections as well as red, white, rose, sparkling, specialty and dessert wines.  Whether you prefer wine that is dry, fruity, subtle or bold, Brotherhood has something for everyone with a wide range of price points.

The grounds of Brotherhood Winery are expansive and inviting. They include facilities for special events that range from small intimate gatherings to corporate events and weddings. Their Grand Monarque Hall is beautifully appointed and was restored in 2011 to its former grandeur. Dining for guests is available at the Vinum Café, Wednesday to Sunday from noon until 9:00 p.m.  The Café is located on the ground floor of the original winery that dates back to 1839.  They boast light fare, fine dining and a full service bar.

There are also popular special events annually including their Wine and Sangria Pig Roast, Wine and Beer Fest and Halloween Ball.  A day trip to Brotherhood Winery is an excursion you will long remember.

Brotherhood Winery is located at 100 Brotherhood Plaza Drive, Washingtonville, New York, 10992. For more information on tours, tasting or to book a special event, you can visit their web site at www.brotherhood-winery.com or call them at (845) 496-3661.

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo (Citadel Press, 1970)

How does a reviewer do justice to a book called “the great American novel”? I first read Johnny Got His Gun during the Viet Nam war, when young people, nationwide, were protesting fighting in a war that was a senseless waste of life; a war in which the United States had no business participating.
