Cardace, Gillen Combine for Eight Hits as Arcadia Baseball Splits with Alvernia

AMBLER, Pa. – The Arcadia baseball team split a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader with Alvernia Friday, taking game one, 4-2, and falling in game two, 9-4. The Scarlet and Grey were powered by senior Nick Cardace and junior Bryan Gillen, who combined for eight hits on the day.
FOR THE RECORD:

  • The Knights are now 13-7 on the year, including a 5-2 mark in the MAC Commonwealth.
  • The Golden Wolves own a 17-7 record and are 9-2 in conference play.

GAME TWO: ARCADIA 4, ALVERNIA 2
HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Cardace was the first to cross the plate, as he was brought home courtesy of a sac fly by junior Nick Ponente in the bottom of the second inning. Junior Luke Hohenstein scored in the next at-bat on a bunt single by freshman Matt Ernst.
  • Each team scored a run in both the fifth and sixth innings. Junior Sean Carew drove in Arcadia's fifth inning run with a RBI-single to left field, before Cardace sent a solo home run to left center in the top of the sixth.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Cardace led the charge for the Scarlet and Grey, going 2-for-3 with a home run, RBI and two runs scored.
  • Gillen, Carew, Hohenstein, Ponente and Ernst each registered a base hit.

ON THE HILL:

  • Junior Joel Bartoni (3-1) got the start allowing just one run, while striking out two in 4.2 innings of work. Senior Mike Boulanger picked up his second save of the season, fanning four in 2.1 innings.
  • Thomas Malik (4-1) took the loss for Alvernia, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits in five innings.

NOTES:

  • Cardace's home run marks the first for Arcadia at Skip Wilson Field.

GAME 2: ALVERNIA 9, ARCADIA 4
HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Junior Phil Pierfy got the offense going early with a two-run home run in the top of the first inning.
  • Alvernia went on to score in each of the final four innings.
  • The Knights got two runs back in the bottom of the seventh, when Cardace singled in Gillen before Carew scored when Hohenstein reached on a fielder's choice.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Cardace went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
  • Gillen and Ernst each went 2-for-2. Gillen scored two runs.
  • Pierfy drove in two runs.

ON THE HILL:

  • Senior Ryan Ulrich (0-1) took the loss in relief allowing four runs. Senior Jake Lloyd got the start, allowing two runs while striking out three in four innings.
  • John Catchmark (2-1) allowed two runs on seven hits in four innings. Zack Landy earned the save throwing three innings of relief.

NOTES:

  • Gillen has 11 multi-hit games this season; Cardace has 10.
  • Gillen is on a nine-game hit streak, and has reached base safely in all 20 games thus far this season.

UP NEXT:

  • The rubber match between the Knights and Golden Wolves is set for tomorrow at Alvernia. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
