Carey Sworn to Five-Year Term as Middlesex County Prosecutor

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ - Andrew C. Carey was sworn in today to serve a five-year term as Middlesex County prosecutor.

Prosecutor Carey, who served for more than a year as the Middlesex County acting prosecutor, took the oath of office during a ceremony at the Middlesex County Administration Building in New Brunswick. The oath was administered by Superior Court Judge Travis L. Francis, assignment judge for the Middlesex County vicinage.

Prosecutor Carey subsequently administered the oath to the assistant prosecutors and investigators who work in the prosecutor’s office.

Prosecutor Carey thanked staff members for their hard work and continued support, noting he has worked with assistant prosecutors in court and with investigators at crime scenes. “I know you do the right thing, no matter what it takes,’’ he said.

In addition to Judge Francis, guests at the ceremony included Superior Court Judge Bradley Ferencz, Superior Court Judge Alberto Rivas, state Sen. Robert Smith, state Sen. Sam Thompson, Middlesex County Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios, Freeholder H. James Polos, John A. Pulomena, the county administrator, and Joseph W. Krisza, head of the county Department of Public Safety and Health.

Also in attendance were Hunterdon County Prosecutor Anthony Kearns, Morris County Acting Prosecutor Frederic M. Knapp, Union County Acting Prosecutor Grace H. Park, Philip J. Degnan, director of the State Commission of Investigation, and Charles McKenna, director of the New Jersey Schools Development Authority.

Guests from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Newark were John Gay, deputy chief of the criminal division, Narcotics Chief Ronnell Wilson, Narcotics Unit Paralegal Yolonda Mike, Investigator Matthew Maltese and retired District Office Security Manager Thomas Maltese.

Prosecutor Carey began serving as acting prosecutor on May 6, 2013 after he was nominated on March 31, 2013 by Gov. Chris Christie to become the county’s chief law enforcement officer. The state Senate confirmed the nomination on June 23, 2014.

Prosecutor Carey has an extensive background in criminal prosecutions. Before joining Middlesex County he served as an assistant U.S. attorney in Newark, where he worked as chief of the narcotics unit and Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force. He began serving in the office in 2005, and was appointed chief of the narcotics unit and organized crime task force in 2010.

He began his career in law enforcement in 1996, working as an assistant district attorney in the New York District Attorney’s Office in Manhattan until 2005.

He earned his law degree from the Dickinson School of Law in Carlisle, Pa. in 1996, and graduated Magna Cum Laude from The American University in Washington, D.C. with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1993.

He also is the recipient of numerous professional awards and honors, including recognition from the FBI and the New York City Police Department Joint Organized Crimes Task Force, the N.Y.P.D. police commissioner, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police Academy, and the International Narcotics Enforcement Officers Association, Inc.

The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office oversees 28 municipal and university police departments and is among the busiest in the state. The office handles more than 6,000 criminal complaints annually, has a budget of nearly $18 million, and employs 190 people, including 42 assistant prosecutors, 63 investigators and 15 agents.

South Plainfield BOE Names Samuel Fierra Head of Guidance

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ - The South Plainfield Board of Education announced Feb. 8 that Sam Fierra had been appointed director of guidance for the South Plainfield School District.

Fierra previously served as interim director of guidance South Plainfield before being permanently appointed to the position in January, replacing Elaine Gallo who retired after serving as director for 10 years.
