The South Plainfield Democratic Candidates for Borough Council, Cassie Capparelli and Roberto Sayers, this week outlined their proposal for a Shop Local initiative that would give property tax credits for shopping at local businesses. Roberto Sayers stated, “We first handed out flyers introducing our ‘Shop Local’ plan at the Christmas In July event this past summer.  We were then surprised, yet pleased to see the Republicans tout the idea as their own a few weeks later.  As they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and we thank the Republicans for their support of our plan.  We think this is a great way to stimulate local businesses while providing tax relief to our residents.  The idea is simple – taxpayers would get a tax break based on a percentage of dollars spent with participating local businesses during the year.”

Cassie Capparelli continued, “As Roberto and I have walked door-to-door, residents have concerns about the ever-rising property taxes.  This Shop Local plan is a way to help everyone – residents and businesses.  This type of plan can really help South Plainfield – it will help keep money in the local community; it will help to create and sustain local jobs; and it will strengthen the local community and economy.  This initiative does not involve re-inventing the wheel.  Hundreds of U.S. communities have initiated “buy local” campaigns in recent years, and there are many organizations that can guide us in setting up such a program, such as American Independent Business Alliance or the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives.  We can start by gaining a solid understanding of what has worked and what hasn’t worked elsewhere.”

Roberto Sayers continued, “With the growing emphasis on on-line shopping, it is imperative that the Borough government recognize and reward our residents’ support of local businesses.  Surveys have shown that businesses in towns with active “buy local” campaigns reported a wide range of positive impacts on their businesses, including bringing new customers to their business, making existing customers more loyal, creating more jobs locally, and fueling entrepreneurship for new start-up businesses.  The tools to accomplish this campaign are out there.  A Shop Local campaign recognizes the important role that local businesses have in South Plainfield’s economy and recognizes the value of growing the local business base.  By tying the Shop Local initiative to property tax relief, we can benefit both our taxpayers and our business owners.  We need to make this a reality.”

In closing, Cassie Capparelli stated, “A Shop Local campaign will work to provide business growth while rewarding taxpayers with property tax relief.  When Roberto and I elected, the Borough of South Plainfield will form a Shop Local Committee with members from the business community, municipal government, business associations, civic organizations, and other interested parties.  This is an idea that can and must be implemented.  With new leadership, South Plainfield can get things done.”
