SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – An elderly man and woman were each injured as a fast-moving house fire swept through their East Hendricks Boulevard home. South Plainfield Fire units responded to an active structure fire at the 400 block of East Hendricks Boulevard a little after 6:00 pm Sunday evening. According to neighbors at the scene the elderly couple who live at the location escaped the blaze, but suffered some burns.
Neighbors assisted the couple with towels and blankets until emergency personnel arrived. According to people at the scene one of the owners said they had been making tea and the next thing she knew the kitchen was on fire.
Fire Units from South Plainfield and Plainfield were at the scene. New Market Fire Company was also providing mutual aid.
According to emergency personnel both victims were transferred to the Burn Center at Saint Barnabas.
“Obviously, all of our thoughts are with the victims of this terrible fire,” said South Plainfield Mayor Matthew P. Anesh. “The emergency personnel here tonight have done an amazing job, with very challenging conditions. It’s incredible watching our volunteer fire department extinguishing this fire in such cold.”
