Somerville, N.J. – A North Plainfield man was arrested and charged in an early morning robbery at the CVS store located on Route #22 in North Plainfield.
Acting Somerset County Prosecutor Michael H. Robertson, Acting Chief of County Detectives Timothy M. Fitzgerald, and North Plainfield Borough Chief of Police William Parenti announce the arrest of James A. Munoz, age 20, of Harrison Avenue, North Plainfield, New Jersey.
According to officials on April 19, 2016 at approximately 4:56 a.m. North Plainfield Police were dispatched via a 9-1-1 call to the CVS located on U.S. Highway Route 22 East, following the report of an armed robbery. Responding Officers located and interviewed two store employees who related that two males entered the store and stole cash from a locked register drawer. Both individuals were wearing black ski masks covering a portion of their faces and one was carrying a long arm rifle.
The employees related that the suspect carrying the rifle was a black male and the second suspect who removed the cash was a white male. One of the employees recognized the second male as the store’s overnight manager, James A. Munoz. He further stated that when he relieved Munoz earlier that evening he did not receive the second cash drawer key from Munoz.
Detectives from the North Plainfield Police Department and the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit responded to conduct the investigation. As a result of the investigation, detectives obtained a Superior Court Search Warrant for defendant Munoz’ residence.
Detectives subsequently executed the search warrant and recovered clothing, a black mask, gloves, the CVS cash drawer key and three shotguns. Defendant Munoz was taken into custody without incident upon his arrival at the residence.
Defendant Munoz was charged with Robbery, 1st Degree, Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, 3rd Degree, and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, 3rd Degree.
Defendant Munoz was lodged in the Somerset County Jail. Bail was set by the Honorable Kathy Qasim, J.S.C., at $150,000 cash only, with the condition that should he make bail he is not to have contact with the victims.
Acting Prosecutor Robertson states that the investigation is continuing as detectives attempt to identify the second suspect who participated in the robbery. The suspect is described as a black male, thin build, medium height, last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, dark pants, with a black ski mask covering a portion of his face.
