Davis Wins 6 Races In One Day At Aqueduct

Journeyman jockey Dylan Davis became the winter riding star at Aqueduct when he won six races on the Feb. 18 card, five of those in succession, and took the lead in the jockey standings with 30 wins for the season.

The son of former rider Robbie Davis became the first rider to win six on a card in New York since Hall of Fame rider Javier Castellano posted that number on Nov. 9, 2013 at the Big A. In all, the Manhasset, Long Island resident finished in the money with all of his Sunday mounts adding two runner-up rides and one third place finish. None of his six wins on the nine-race card were aboard favorites.

Davis posted five wins on one afternoon on Feb. 4 for the second time in his career. He put up a five-bagger at Indiana Grand in 2013.

Davis' personal record began in the first race when he rode Mo Flash to win a Maiden Special Weight for trainer Mark Casse and owner Tina Casse. He returned in the second with Crimson Frost to win an allowance for owner Aron Yagoda and trainer Linda Rice.

The $100,000 Gander Stakes for New York-breds was over early when Davis sent August Dawn Farm's Nine Route to the front early and stayed on for a three length win on the 3-year-old colt for trainer Jeremiah Englehart. In the fourth, Davis kept those who backed him on Dead Broke from being dead broke when the gelding won a maiden claimer for Our Sugar Bear Stable and trainer Bruce Brown.

Davis' fifth consecutive win took a little longer than the 1 minute,18.95 seconds it took Morning Buzz, the first horse across the line, to run the 6-1/2 furlongs. Davis, aboard Getoffmyback for the Philmar Stables and trainer David Duggan, was dueling with Morning Buzz and Manny Franco down the stretch when Morning Buzz tried to get away from Franco's whip and came in bumping with Getoffmyback passing the 16th pole. From there on, Morning Buzz was leaning on Getoffmyback until they crossed the finish line with Morning Buzz, the 3 to 2 favorite, in front by a neck.

With the infield tote board already flashing 'Stewards Inquiry,' Davis dismounted and headed for the Clerk of Scales' telephone to lodge a claim of foul against Morning Buzz and Franco. The stewards agreed with Davis and took down Morning Buzz' Number 7 and put up Getoffmyback's Number 1. The all-Dylan Davis Pick 5 returned $1,206.75 for a 50-cent wager.

Davis' consecutive streak was broken when he finished third in the sixth race, a maiden claimer, aboard Tough Old Bird for owner-trainer David Donk and his partners.

Davis returned in the seventh to win with the New York-bred Gorelli of trainer H. James Bond and the Bond Racing Stable defeating seven rivals in the 6-1/2-furlong contest for $25,000 claimers.

Davis missed a seven-win day when he finished second in the $100,000 Broadway Stakes for New York-bred fillies and mares aboard Bond's Bee Noteworthy who was six lengths astern of Startwithsilver and Junior Alvarado.

After his sixth win, Davis was realistic about winning six on one day at the winter meeting. “New York is New York. To do the six winners is an incredible feat,” he said. Looking to the time when Hall of Famers Javier Castellano, John Velazquez and the Ortiz Brothers, Irad and reigning riding champion Jose, return for the Big A Spring Meeting and then Belmont Spring, he said, “With the big guys coming back, hopefully I have enough momentum to carry through a little better than I did last year.”

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote (Random House, 1965)

In Cold Blood is, quite simply, the grand-daddy of true crime writing, dubbed by Capote, himself, as the first non-fiction novel (although Norman Mailer argued the point when he published The Executioner's Song in 1979.) The conditions under which I read In Cold Blood for the first time were pretty weird, which was another ...

If You Want to Experience the Awkwardness of Race Relations, Look No Further Than Sunday Morning

In a country that is more racially divided than ever, our churches reflect the divide on Sunday morning. In America, we miss the mark on integrating the faces and lives of many races and ethnicities into our Christian communities.
