SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ - The South Plainfield Democratic Candidates for Borough Council, Gary Vesce and Bill Bethea, this week voiced their support for the development of new athletic facilities to support year round participation in sports.  Bill Bethea explained, “There is enough room near the baseball facilities on Kenneth Avenue to develop an indoor practice facility to promote year round participation in youth baseball, football, field hockey and soccer.  The reality of sports in the twenty-first century is that kids want to play their favorite sports all year, not just in the regular season for that sport.  This would supplement the PAL building which provides basketball, wrestling and weight training.”

Gary Vesce continued, “South Plainfield’s great tradition of recreation and youth sports is one of the key factors that attract young families to the Borough.  In order to keep South Plainfield attractive to the next generation of families, we have to look at how young people now participate in sports.  Many kids now play one or just a few sports.  We can support that focus by building better facilities so that families do not have to travel miles to participate in year round activities.  We have to work together and do better for the youth of South Plainfield.”

Bill Bethea stated, “I work at a year round sports facility in Mercer County.  I see kids from different parts of the state that play there.  This type of asset is the wave of the future and South Plainfield should embrace it.  I agree with Gary that South Plainfield has quality recreational and sports programs, but we can make them even better by planning for the future.  In addition to an in-door sports facility, we should look at improving the Borough’s support of swimming and diving at the Community Pool through our recreation program, and starting a youth golf program at the West Nine golf course.”

Gary Vesce concluded, “We can do better for the taxpayers of South Plainfield by focusing on the opportunities to enhance recreation and youth sports.  The youth of South Plainfield is the future of our Borough and we have to support them with new opportunities and facilities.  Bill Bethea and I have a vision for the future of our recreation and youth sports programs and we think it meets the changing needs of South Plainfield’s families.”
