EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ - Saturday afternoon the band is playing at the wildly popular Punk Rock Flea Market in Trenton.  Then there's a quick trip down to DC to perform at the annual Amfest at the American University along with the rapper Amine' whose song Caroline was a big hit on campus.  On Sunday night, they return to New Jersey to open the show for Bon Jovi at the NJ PAC in Newark.  East Brunswick's Bobby Mahoney and the Seventh Son are climbing up the ladder of rock and roll success, one energetic show at a time.  And, wow, what a weekend the band has coming up.

Mahoney (EBHS '13) started the band in high school with his friends John Albee and Drew Agey, both members of the class of 2011.  Though he is the last member of the band who still lives in the township, he credits his early experiences in East Brunswick with giving him the opportunity to perform so many times during his years as a student.  "I want to thank Mr. Z, Mr. Becker, Mr. Perez, Mr. Toth, Mr. Papenhagen, Ms. LoPresti, Ms. Vanzini, and Dr. Saccadato who all helped me over the years.  The arts and music programs in East Brunswick made this happen for me."

"I've been working on this since fifth grade," said Mahoney in an interview with TAPinto East Brunswick.  The guitarist recalled his "breakout" performance singing Bon Jovi's Wanted: Dead or Alive onstage at Warnsdorfer in the Talent Show.  "I wasn't very good," said Mahoney, who sang along to a cassette tape at the time.  "I got better.  Bon Jovi's always been a favorite."

Mahoney also maintains an East Brunswick connection with filmmaker Zack Morrison (EBHS'10,) who directs his videos and films concert performances.

Mahoney was called to perform at Sunday's concert this past Monday by a manager for Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, with whom the band will perform in Canada later this month.  Mahoney, who also did guitar checks for the popular shore band Joe Grushecky and House Rockers also performed onstage with Bruce Springsteen during the Light of Day Parkinson's Disease charity concerts in 2014 and 2105 when Springsteen made a surprise visit to the shows.  Grushecky said, "Hey, Bobby, grab a guitar and get onstage."  Mahoney wound up playing Thunder Road, Twist 'n Shout, and Promised Land with the Boss.

By day, Mahoney teaches at the Fusion Academy in Princeton, "a one-to-one private school with individualized scheduling that promotes school and life balance," according to the school's website.  "On my worst day, " says Mahoney, "I have to teach one kid how to play the bass guitar."

Bobby Mahoney and the Seventh Son - the band's new EP just released on Spotify and Bandcamp - earned praise in a review on NJ Racket, an online music community publication:  "With boundless energy, driving guitars, and catchy choruses that beg you to shout along, Bobby Mahoney and the Seventh Son works to convey all the spirit of a live show by a band that truly seems to love what they do."  NJ Racket's review concludes by noting the level of the band's performance energy, "The EP closes out with three live tracks, including the live version of Called it Quits. The live versions of New Age Outlaws and Leave it Frayed spew forth all the energy your little punk rock heart could desire and give a little teaser of the dynamism these guys bring to live shows."

This Sunday night in Newark, Bobby Mahoney will perform once again with Jersey rock royalty.  This time, he will leave the cassette tape behind.
