EDISON, NJ - On September 19, 54 Edison High School alumni, along with friends and family, will travel to Cape May, NJ to compete in the 4th Annual Dragon Boat Festival.
Their team, Amy's Army, was founded four years ago, to honor a fellow friend and classmate, Amy Zandomenego Sub (Class of '84) who was battling breast cancer. Amy was a member of the Machestic Dragons dragon boat team, which is New Jersey's first team made up solely of breast cancer survivors.
The team has grown from 18 members to a 54 in just four years.
"The excitement of dragon boat racing has definitely caught on," Beth Wilson, Captain of Amy's Army stated.
The international sport of dragon boat racing, is gaining popularity locally. Amy's Army competes twice a year to raise money for a college fund that was started for Ms. Sub's two surviving children. Sadly, Amy lost her battle just weeks after the teams’ debut race. Her friends and fellow alumni keep her memory alive and use the race weekend as a chance to celebrate her life and fighting spirit. Her presence is definitely felt on the boat.
This year the team with be racing with two boats, sponsored by two area businesses; On Target Staffing of North Brunswick and Big Splash Graphics of West Freehold.
